Here’s what your guacamole — and other groceries — would cost if we had a Mexico border tax

It was a claim that President Donald Trump repeated on the campaign trail: that he would build a wall and that the Mexicans would pay for it. In his first few days in office, Trump appeared to make good on one portion of that promise, by signing an executive order for the planning and building of that wall to proceed.

But the cost for that wall will temporarily be borne by Americans, Trump said, and Mexico’s government insists it will not pay for the construction on the border. On Thursday, President Donald Trump floated a 20 percent tax on imports from Mexico which suggested that until Trump’s promised reimbursement from the Mexicans materializes, Americans would pay for the border wall with their pocketbooks.

The White House clarified afterwards that Trump’s suggestion was an option rather than an official proposal, but social media users quickly questioned the possible uptick in one particular grocery item: avocados, of which 80 percent come from

America’s southern neighbor. Though the price of the guacamole’s main ingredient varies from market to market, the creamy green fruit usually costs a few dollars. Assuming a $3 cost, a 20 percent tax would increase the price to $3.60.

Takis, a common packaged food snack, would go from $6 to $7.20, the Washington Post reported. Other staples like tomato paste would also see only a slight markup, from about $1.20 to $1.44.

I believe pre NAFTA Mexican avocados were not allowed imported. Or it was a tight quota. I don’t recall exactly but it was a political issue. CA avocado growers had a lot of power.

No, you can buy California, Florida, Arizona, even Utah produce. If you complain to your grocery store they will even start carrying it, I know that because I did.

OH!! That’s exciting! even if you get miniature bananas.
I’m growing coffee. Had a couple of beans two years ago, nothing last year. I’m keeping a diary so as to figure out what I did correctly two years ago.

I think America is fed up with 90 million unemployed and will willing pay a 20% tariff. The upside is huge and prices won't stay up that long.

How long before avocado production ramps up in CA and AZ behind a built in 20% profit margin.

Once Uncle Sam gets addicted to the revenues tariffs bring in then they will become permanent. Which is a good thing in the long run.

I don’t buy any produce from Mexico because they allow use of human POO for fertilizer.

Seriously?? :-O

I go out of my way to avoid produce from Mexico, too, but I've never heard about this before...

Well, Jeb Bush loves his guacamole...remember the guacamole plastic bowls he was selling for big bucks to bolster his campaign funds? Poor guy will have to pay more for the ingredients.

Commercially made guacamole also seems to be made exclusively in Mexico. Why can't we make it here?

Oh fer gawds-ache!

It's just mashed up avocados and some spices (cayenne, cumin, garlic) It's green paste.

ISRAEL grows delicious Haas avocados and is a major supplier to Europe. Israel has staked its place as one of the prominent exporters of avocados in the world. Israeli avocado exports rank in the top 10 of countries globally, with annual exports of over 50,000 tons accounting for some 6.2% of the overall avocado trade in the world.

Our local Save A lot got FL grown avocados sometimes for less than $1 each. Not like the ones from CA but pretty good.

Trade bankrupt cities, overwhelmed medical services, and the rule of law for cheap guacamole.

Sure thing, Jeb!

I am so glad to hear that. I bought my son a coffee plant and am so anxious to hear if it produces or not. If you remember, ping me when you figure out what the secret was.

I am trying really hard to get some plants growing of things that I like, oranges, limes and lemons. I grow my own vegetables but love, really love fresh citrus. What I buy in the store is not fresh, tree ripened.

Holy Guacamole!

Avocados are already really expensive. If they start to cost that much more people will grow them and sell them!

I agree. a lot of increased price BS. Probably true temporarily, but Americans either already produce or will produce all that is necessary. IMHO it is SNAP Food Stamps that make things so expensive. Half the country produces little and the producers have to pay for it.

That’s right!

I go to WINCO where many things are from the USA and they have excellent quality of fresh produce at very low prices compared to other nearby grocers.
