I lived in Germany for 5+ years and became conversationally fluent, but that was many years ago.

I got a degree in Germanic Languages. My professors said my pronunciation was flawless without a trace of accent. I have also heard that from several Germans I’ve met. When we went to the 2003 Dayton Air Show, there were a couple of Luftwaffe fighter jocks there with their Tornadoes. I really enjoyed schmoozing with them auf Deutsch. I watched “Downfall” without needing subtitles.
The internet certainly helps maintain proficiency.
I’ve picked up a decent amount of Spanish just from listening to it, and some Russian too. It’s just a knack, I guess.
