Senate Republicans voted on Tuesday night to silence Elizabeth Warren for reading out a letter from the widow of Martin Luther King during a debate over Senator Jeff Sessions nomination for attorney general, eliciting furious response from Democrats.
Speaking on the Senate floor, Warren quoted from 30-year-old correspondence from Coretta Scott King relating to Sessions failed judicial nomination in the 1980s. It was part of a barnstorming speech by the Massachusetts Senator against Sessions suitability for the post and attacking his record on civil rights.
Mitch McConnell, the Republican majority leader, objected that Warren had broken Senate rules that prohibit one member impugning the conduct of another. Senators then voted 49-43 to uphold a ruling in McConnells favour.
Warren hit back on Twitter. She posted to her 1.74 million followers: Tonight @SenateMajLdr silenced Mrs Kings voice on the Sen floor - & millions who are afraid & appalled by whats happening in our country. Others on Twitter were posting with the hashtag #LetLiz Speak.

“Republicans exploit procedure”
Sigh.
Democrats smear and smear and smear.... when they get called out on their vile behavior they always double down.
It looks like McConnell is finally growing a pair.
Time for them to put their diapers on and roll around on the floor in protest.
Of course they started a hashtag. Those are always effective — it’s not virtue-signalling or two-minute-hate venting at all.
No. He silence the voice of a foul mouthed fake Indian.
It only remains to be seen what color the ribbon will be...
Expect a new round of fundraising to be out today from the squaw based on this horrific treatment. It will request checks made out to “Citizens Against Senate Horror”, but if you can’t fit that on the “To” line, you can abbreviate.
Tip of the hat for this obscure reference to Phil Silvers and his sitting Squaw in a teepee on the Washington Mall in a Beverley Hillbillies episode from a long time ago.
Fauxcahontas was warned. She chose to ignore the warning. Schumer can cry me a river.
What does the Senate expect of Fauxchahontas
whose family made genocide on Indians
before acquiring their rights to Harvard scholarships?
She lies. ... when her mouth is open.
Follow the damned rules, Warren, and maybe you could be speaking right now.
I know you think you are above every law, but you’re not.
In a related story, after thirty years of having written that letter, coretta king was unavailable for comment, though her husband said this... one day, my children will be judged, oh never mind.
(PS: With passing year, Schumer looks more and more like Barney Frank.)
So, you’re saying her Indian name is “Lies When Mouth Move”?
PizzaGate will proof you right.
Post of the day Laz. The last 8 yrs was about ignoring the rule of law, creating new law from the bench, and a bazillion other oddities. If he is sworn in this evening, a good chunk of this ends, aka AG Jeff Sessions. I can't wait to see who his Solicitor General will be. A Law and Order team is darn near in place, look @ President Trump's team on Defense and Intel without naming them all. It goes all the way down to following the Rules in the Senate, not parking where you feel like it because your a Senator and dropping the line, "Do you know who I am" stuff. The new Sheriff is in town, behave children, behave...
Warren wouldn't know the truth if it bit her on the butt.
I heard on the radio this morning that the 30-year old letter she wanted to read from King was 100% repudiated. None of the things she accuses him of in the letter turned out to be true.
