Four Republican senators have withdrawn their support for Labor Secretary nominee Andrew Puzder after he admitted to hiring an undocumented immigrant as his housekeeper, Law Newz reported.

Per sources, Sens. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Tim Scott, and Johnny Isakson have all said they will not support Puzder, a chief executive of Hardee's parent company, because of all the hiccups ahead of his confirmation hearing.

Puzder said in a statement Feb. 6 he and his wife had employed a housekeeper for three years but didn't know she was in the U.S. illegally.

"When I learned of her status, we immediately ended her employment and offered her assistance in getting legal status," he said. "We have fully paid back taxes to the IRS and the State of California."

You accept that he didn’t know his housekeeper, who he’s entrusted with being a part of his family, is an invader. I don’t. Why does he think paying back taxes excuses him? And why THE HECK did he try to “make her legal”? Didn’t you follow Trump’s campaign? You can’t make an invader legal. She has to go home and start from there.

Dump him. He’s not stupid so that must mean he’s a liar. And then to help her get legal status???? Throw her lying illegal azz back over the border. Come on, Donald, find someone loyal to his fellow Americans.

I would have to hear all the details. I do know most people use an agency to hire household help. Reporters never report the details that can make a difference; and they are terrible writers so we don’t really have enough facts to know whether he was guilty of hiring an illegal or if he believed she had been vetted by an agency.

If I was going to hire household help I would want them thoroughly checked out for safety and legalities. I would also want them to be bonded in case they turned out to be a thief. I cannot imagine someone in his position would not hire that way and it is usually done through an agency.

As to the other- if he did offer to help her become legal does that mean he understood the process? Most people do not understand the process and at least at one time it was possible to help an illegal become a legal worker. I know a rancher that unknowingly hired 2 illegals and when he found out he did help them get green cards to legally work in the U.S. so it was possible to do that and may still be possible for all I know. That happened many years ago so I have no idea if it is still possible.

I don’t like the idea that he supports open borders or illegal immigration, President Trump shouldn’t have anyone in his circle that does not support enforcing the law and securing the border. I did not know that about him.

It sounds to me like he needs to withdraw if for no other reason than this issue has become a big distraction. I still don’t know if the man knowingly hired an illegal.

I agree that anyone hiring illegals should not be able to serve. What’s funny is that the democrats probably knew the worker was illegal back when it happened, but did not follow trough with deportation.

So tired of this!!!!!

Federal law requires every employer (including household employers) to fill out an I-9 for every employee prior to start of employment. So ignorance of immigration status is no excuse. If we give this Puzder - someone presumably with the personal financial resources to hire legal employees - a pass while demanding that fedgov throw the book at big companies that do the same with hundreds or thousands of employees, we don’t have a leg to stand on. Surely with all the wealth that Puzder has, he would have performed on in-depth background check on his housekeeper. That would have cost a few hundred dollars and revealed if there were any issues.

Unless I am reading this story wrong, Puzder needs to be withdrawn. Trump does not need this issue dogging his administration for the next 4 years.

Some illegals were brought here as children, educated here and speak perfect English. They don’t have an accent so likely would not trigger a question. Some of their documents are real documents so will pass a check- they just aren’t their documents. It is astonishing the background checks some illegals have been able to pass. Several years ago it was discovered that a Border Patrol agent was an illegal. He was using his brother’s documents and his brother was born here so was a citizen. The illegal BP wasn’t even suspected until he was caught assisting smugglers. Sometimes it is very hard to determine, sometimes it is more obvious.

I also think he would worry about the safety of himself and his family and their things; that is why most people use a so-called reputable agency to hire help that will have that kind of access. If he truly knew and didn’t care that would not only make him a supporter of illegals but would prove he is an idiot to put his family in harms way by allowing someone into their home they knew nothing about.

“If they have papers, you accept them. If you have someone that you suspect might not be a citizen, you cannot treat them different or do additional research into their background or you will face an EEOC violation.”

I would agree with you that the I-9 really doesn’t help much except that the prospective employee needs to produce papers. I understand that one cannot ask for more than 2 pieces of ID. IIRC, the Obama admin prosecuted a company for asking for more proof, on behalf of illegals! But the background check based on the name, home address, DL, DOB can give plenty of info. Surely someone hiring a housekeeper, who would have a key to the house and be alone in it at times, would go to the expense of a thorough background check??

I do not support hiring illegals in any way. I do know illegals have been caught working in positions that they had to pass a serious background check to work there. Some have excellent documents that are real, they just aren’t theirs. No one should hire an illegal but people do not always know they are illegal.

Obama had a Treasury Secretary who did not pay his taxes. That didn’t seem to be a problem. Puzder should be confirmed.

the Democrats will manage to find their indignant stand on making sure that illegal aliens are not hired...

They will act like they have never been for AMNESTY at his confirmation hearing...

“DREAMERS ??? What are they ???”

I wish the reporter would have done more investigating, they leave too many unanswered questions.

If he used an agency, the agency may have provided the background check, and the agency may have acted as contractor so it might be on them. If he hired her outright, did he report her wages? Was she using another identity? Did taxes get paid on someone else? I don’t know, but all of this is possible.

Is it possible he knew flat out she was an illegal and hired her anyway and paid her under the table? Yes all of that is possible but I don’t know if that is how it happened or not.

If he knew she was an illegal, then he is an idiot to bring a person into his home knowing nothing about her. If he is that stupid he should not have any position of responsibility. If he was willing to violate the law then he should not have any position of responsibility.

If the illegal is using a legal person’s identity then they will pass a background check unless it involves fingerprinting. Even fingerprinting won’t work if they have been using the other identity long enough that they used it when prints were originally made. Many of them have real documents, they just aren’t their documents.

Most illegals used to use fake documents, but after background checks became common many started using real documents that were not theirs. Identity theft is a huge problem with illegals. If they can get a real birth certificate they can use it to get real documents with their photos and everything. They use their family members birth certificates, birth certificates belonging to dead people, children, ETC. That is harder to catch but is common.

When you do a background check you are verifying information, if the information is real the background will most likely pass. Doesn’t mean the information you checked belongs to the person you are trying to check out.

Exactly so. In fact, I recall the Dept of Labor was going after employers for refusing to hire illegals.

Well, given that this was a household employee, working in their own home, I believe that there was (and is) significant latitude in the law to request additional information. Bottom line, if in doubt, don’t hire!
