"We have fully paid back taxes to the IRS and the State of California."IMO, those two statements are contradictory.
If he thought she was legally here, why wouldn't he be paying the appropriate taxes to begin with?

He was supposed to pay the taxes at the time and report it to the IRS who would have told him they had a no match if she gave him a fake SS#. He knew she wasn’t legal, that’s why he was paying her under the table and not reporting the taxes."
