I remember sitting on the carpet in front of our 17-inch black and white TV, 9 yrs old, and listening to some demonrat deliver a speech at the 1960 convention. I was taken in by it, and turned to ask Maw if that wasn’t just the best thing that had ever happened.
She just looked at me with an expression that said, “Oh, you poor, stupid, little moron. Are you really the prawn of my loins?”
“Listen up, dummy,” she explained. “Everything he just said is either a lie or a fantasy.” I didn’t get it at the time.
I was pretty busy through Nixon, Ford, and Carter, but when bread jumped 300% and jobs disappeared, I started to pay attention. Then (cue Heavenly Chorus) came Ronaldus Magnus.
I know how your mom felt. When Obama was running in '08, my grandson was being pumped up in his school about how wonderful it would be to have a black president. He was so enthusiastic about it I just wondered where this kid came from.
