Trump flashes anger over Sessions recusal, Russia stories in tense Oval Office meeting
ABC News ^ | 4 Mar 17 | Jonathon Karl and Chris Vlasto

Before heading off to his so-called "winter White House" in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday, President Donald Trump summoned some of his senior staff to the Oval Office and went "ballistic," senior White House sources told ABC News.

The president erupted with anger over the latest slew of news reports connecting Russia with the new administration -- specifically the abrupt decision by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign.

Sources said the president felt Sessions' recusal was unnecessary and only served to embolden Trump's political opponents. The attorney general made his announcement Thursday just as Trump returned to Washington from a trip to the U.S.S. Gerald Ford in Virginia for a speech about his agenda as president.

Hours earlier, aboard the ship, the president had told reporters that he had "total" confidence in Sessions and saw no reason why the attorney general should recuse himself.

“We should have had a good week. We should have had a good weekend. But once again, back to Russia," a senior White House official said, expressing the frustration simmering in the West Wing following the news earlier in the week that Sessions failed to disclose during his confirmation process that he had met with the Russian ambassador twice during the election campaign. Sessions at the time was a senator on the Armed Services Committee and was also helping the Trump campaign.

Among those gathered in the Oval Office on Friday: Chief of staff Reince Priebus, chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon, White House Counsel Don McGahn, press secretary Sean Spicer, newly-hired Communications Director Mike Dubke, along with Trump son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump, the sources said.

Sessions cannot oversee an investigation of something that involved himself.
***
That’s my logical conclusion which might be wrong.

No, you are quite right. What many on the Left and in the MSM, along with a few Repubs choose to conveniently overlook is that there are two clear, distinct and separate issues in the mix.

First, did Sessions commit perjury while testifying at the Senate?
It would appear not. Sessions responded within the scope of Franken’s question. When preparing a witness for testimony a litigator will often caution the witness to not provide more information than a question solicits.

Secondly, did Sessions have a conflict of interest in any investigation of the election?
Arguably, Sessions received something of value and should have recused himself on that basis alone. More importantly, Sessions believed he had a conflict of interest.

With the clarity of hindsight, of course, rather than throw red meat at the rabid left and MSM, it would have been better to simply announce that a Special Prosecutor would be appointed.

IDK, maybe there is a silver lining. If Sessions is not busy with Russia-gate, he can devote all of his time to John podesta, Pizzagate, and the Clinton Crime Foundation.

I would hope so, but after his press conference last week, I was left wondering if Session could aggressively investigate a traffic ticket, let alone a child-kidnapping-torture-murder-rape-DC power players-pedophile ring.

This entire article is garbage with no sourced material. It’s ABC, for Pete’s sake. This trash media site is no better than Hitler’s Ministry of Propaganda.

Freeze this thread and don’t allow any more comments. Label it Trash before one of our hand-wringing FReepers has an unnecessary stroke.

Sessions recusal was necessary in the long run, but his opponents will try to use it against him.

“It’s either lies or the white house is bugged.”

Obama had the Oval Office renovated after the election. I’ve been saying for months that he had the Oval Office wired with bugs.

It’s only a disaster if you buy into the fake stream media narrative. Flashes anger, WH sources, all unconfirmed. We know that the media is capable of making anything up; they are desperate to be relevant.

This is disinfo designed to sow dissension and confusion into the fake stream media’s enemy camp. Look, these guys already conspired by giving questions to Hitlery and fabricating overly fake polls. These guys ARE capable of much worse deeds than disinfo.

Trump needs to make sure that he can conduct meetings in complete secrecy. All individual attending any meeting of importance have to be completely searched and sign a non-disclosure agreement not to talk to the press or anyone else unless directed by Trump to do so.

I want the old FR back, when everyone would cut/paste the reply they’re responding to so everyone else could keep up. People here communicate now as if they’re writing a text message and everyone else on the other end already knows the context behind what they’re saying.

Stop being lazy, people. You’re talking to the world, and the rest of us want to read and understand your brilliant pearls of wisdom!

I swear, one of these days I’m going to troll an interesting, hot thread, typing an ALL-CAP query to every single person who talks to thin air. Y’all don’t MAKE me be annoying, now! LOL.

Exactly. I’d like the media figures who are trained attorneys — Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham, for example — to get on the air and explain that Sessions’ course of action is exactly what any honest lawyer would have done.

This is a new game with no rules and the stupid Republicans don’t get it. I’m not even sure Trump does.

One of the things that's baffled the hell out of me in recent days is the number of Freepers who have the audacity to suggest that Donald Trump -- even after everything that happened over the last two years and culminated in an election that will go down as one of the most improbably upsets in U.S. history -- doesn't understand what he's dealing with.

Why announce the appointment of a special prosecutor?

There isn't even any suggestion that an investigation is ongoing. As far as what is known publicly, Sessions basically recused himself from a non-existent investigation.

That's what kills me. IF this is true that he did this on his own, what was he thinking? I guess he's so used to hanging around with the Uniparty weinies in Congress, he forgot he could actually act like a winner.

Actually, I'm still thinking it's all another trap. More popcorn...
