The biggest point was that it allowed the Democraps and their MSM waterboys to claim during the campaign that Team Trump “Russia ties” were so serious as to merit national security investigations.

Opposition research. Obama-Clinton needed to know who Trump had on his list for various agency appointments and cabinet posts. Notice how quickly the Dems launched into a coordinated attack on Sessions using the same set of talking points. They had those lines of attack developed well in advance because the Democrats knew in advance that Sessions was a top pick for AG.
