Islamic State frees Mosul prisoners as grip on last major city slips

Islamic State has released dozens of prisoners held in jails in the districts of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul that remain under its control, residents said on Saturday.

The release of the prisoners on Friday is another sign that the militants are being overwhelmed by the U.S.-backed Iraqi offensive that started on Oct. 17 to dislodge them from Mosul, their last major city stronghold in Iraq.

Islamic State has lost most cities it captured in Iraq in 2014 and 2015. It declared a caliphate that also spanned parts of Syria from Mosul in 2014.

Among those released were people who had been caught selling cigarettes, violating a smoking ban, or in possession of a mobile phone and therefore suspected of communicating with the outside world, the residents said.

There needs to be an investigation on the reason why ISIS flourished for years under the OBAMA Administration and is now being completely snuffed out during the first months of the TRUMP Administration. U.S. Soldiers died unnecessarily. Those who are responsible need to be tried and prosecuted!

“Those who are responsible need to be tried and prosecuted!”..........

You will note, the article directly referred to the “Obama Administration”, need more be said? The chances that anyone from odumbo’s administration or his ilk will ever be dragged into a courtroom to defend against ANY responsibility in this issue is slim to none.

Odungo and Juan McClame are the ones who started ISIS, in order to kill the Syrian ruler. It backfired on them.

You say you're a non-violent civilian, innocent victims of ISIS oppression.

Got any proof? ISIS was beheading, hanging, raping, flogging, cutting off limbs, burning their enemies alive, and they just let you go free without a scratch?

'Cause I'm thinking you might have been one of them, raping and murdering right up until you got your butt whipped...

Do you think the missions being so successfully executed were only planed in the last thirty days?

I suspect many who worked with ISIS will get away in the confusion and some will be treated to extra legal justice at some later date.

The military might have planned missions they wanted to do last year.

It was only under Trump that they got OK to actually DO the missions.

They should be hunted like Simon Wiesenthal hunted Nazis, like the Mossad hunted Black September. They should never be able to spend two nights in one place.

The leakers at the highest levels are being stopped from informing ISIS of impending strikes. That has happened within the last 30 days.

There HAS been a big change because President Trump is allowing the Generals to fight the war instead of micromanaging as Obama did. Our military is now in charge of the fighting, not a bunch of Anti-American islamists in Washington!

Freed them? That’s a relief. I’d have given significant probability to the possibility of a massacre, given ISIS’ previous behavior in areas where it had firm control.

“Do you think the missions being so successfully executed were only planed in the last thirty days?”

A big turnaround began when GEN Joe Votel took over as the Commanding General of CENTCOM, one year ago. In one month he picked up the pace five to tenfold. Before that, any real successes against ISIS were pretty much by the Iraqis, Syrians, Iranians, and Russians.

Now ISIS is being totally beaten down.

Agreed. And they turned on the procurement to put more in the hands of the fighters.
