It made an impression on me at the time, that our allies were thrown to the wolves, and any future influence for the USA was made so much more difficult.
But ISIS did some careful intelligence prep - their military strategist was a Colonel from the Intelligence service of Saddam’s Iraqi Air Force, and they had a bunch of Ba’athist Intel folks working for him. Many of them met up with Abu Bakr al Baghdadi (who had been al Queda in Iraq under Zarqawi), while they were all confined at Camp Bucca down by Basra.
