The term is sometimes spelled "lede"[2] with a claim it was a historical spelling intended to distinguish it from the homograph lead;[1] however, the spelling 'lede' does not appear in any journalism style books or textbooks before 1959.

Lede - the introductory section of a news story that is intended to entice the reader to read the full story.

Both are correct though. Lede was created in 1965 as a way to distinguish what lead they were actually referring to, to remove confusion. But I bet most people do not know that. 8>)
