California Legislature hikes gas tax for infrastructure plan

California legislators approved a $52 billion infrastructure plan on Thursday meant to address a massive backlog of repair and maintenance projects, while creating thousands of new jobs.

State drivers will shoulder much of the financial burden for the new plan: The bill raises gas taxes by 12 cents a gallon and creates a new annual fee for vehicle owners.

Supporters of the bill said the average driver would pay about $10 more per month in fuel taxes, and most drivers will pay between $25 and $50 annually to license vehicles valued under $25,000.

The measure is a significant win for Gov. Jerry Brown (D), who campaigned hard to win votes for the first gas tax increase in the last 23 years.

"Fixing our roads is basic," Brown said at a rally Wednesday on the steps of the capitol in Sacramento. "If you don't do it now it gets more expensive next year and the year after."

Most of the money, about $33.7 billion, will pay for a backlog of infrastructure repair projects that has grown to $130 billion. The American Society of Civil Engineers estimates that half the state's roads are in poor conditions.

The bloated bureaucrats of California have an insatiable appetite for more taxes to pay their salaries and benefits.

California might have a stable or growing population, but the demographics are changing. The wealthy are leaving CA and the poor are moving in.

Oregon (Portland controlled) voters are just as dumb and evil.

Yes, they are, and most of them are probably from California. As I said, they screw up one place with their Socialism and then and move on and do the same somewhere else.

Left CA 16 years ago after retiring from technology. Was in Silicon Valley for 31 years. Great place for an engineer to work and live. Unfortunately too expensive and crowded to retire there.

I was born in LA in 1948. I moved to Utah in 1982 and I have never been sorry for even one nanosecond. We don’t bother to lock our doors where I live now. Calif is a shythole. I keep encouraging my brothers to GTF out of LA. But nooooooo... a million reasons they have to live in a powderkeg. Well it’s not that I haven’t warned them.

I know a few fools in California. They won’t like this but they’ll keep voting Democrat because they’re fools.

I also know a conservative who lives there and he loves seeing the pain in their faces since Trump won .

If I remember right, Gov. Moonbat wanted the US Gov. to pony up around 600 Billion to fix their infrastructure but I guess they were told to handle it themselves.

I am in CA---all of you in the other 56 states are missing the big points:

Our higher gasoline taxes help to pay for a MUCH higher quality of gasoline with SPECIAL blends.

We have the ability to purchase great earthquake insurance from our GOLDEN state and all of those premiums are placed in a LOCK BOX, so the funds don't disappear, I think..

Our high cigarette taxes are guarded by Mr Reiner(Meathead), so we know that is safe, again, sort of..

Oh,and we have a Bullet train in our future. So, suck it up!

I feel sorry for any Republicans lacking the wherewithal to ditch California, but the ‘rats deserve it.

Typical politicians. Unregistered or outdated registered vehicles in CA are ignored by law enforcement. Just increase the fees on the suckers who stay in compliance to increase the revenue. So sick and tired of lazy bureaucrats.

All I hear people saying is “I’m leaving California at the first opportunity!!” The state has turned to shit because of the mentally-deranged Liberal scum running the state.”

I wonder why the CA legislators don’t just confiscate 90% of their constituents paychecks. Just hurry up and get it over with. Besides, they know how to spend it better than anyone else. And its the patriotic duty of the taxpayers to fork it over, anyway.

Don’t forget we have the pleasure of making sure all the Nanny’s,Housekeepers,Gardners, and Construction Workers get free Healthcare,Cable,EBT,Rent,Utilities, and of course free schooling for the 14 children they each have.

We currently SPEND $69,315,068 DOLLARS Every Single Day just to keep the 3 million Illegal Aliens in this State.

President Trump should tell California to GO POUND SAND when they call asking for money.

Californians bear an enormous fiscal burden as a result of an illegal alien population estimated at almost 3 million residents. The annual expenditure of state and local tax dollars on services for that population is $25.3 billion.

Like the "train to nowhere," this is a pay-off to the trade unions that will rebuild the infrastructure. Union money, public and private, keeps CA Democrats in power. Meanwhile the average driver will get nailed in the pocketbook again for infrastructure maintenance that's been funded by the current gas tax but diverted to other projects.

Quick, call Senator Harris and let her know we finally figured out why California has such high gas prices.

Also it is a 13 cent hike since sales taxes are applied after any state and federal taxes are assigned, so one extra penny+ per gallon is going to the state.

Mind you, the ‘evil gas companies’ and the ‘evil gas stations’ will make less, combined, than the taxes every gallon of gasoline sold.

Ditto here.

Left California almost 30 years ago after 18 years in SF. Have never missed CA and the high cost of taxes.
