WASHINGTON, April 21, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- J. David Cox Sr., national president of the American Federation of Government Employees, the nation's largest federal employee union, today called on Congress to pass a federal budget and keep the government open for business.
"Congress shouldn't be playing chicken with funding federal programs and services that veterans, seniors, and other hardworking people rely on," Cox said. "In a government shutdown, it's the American people who pay the price."
Unless Congress passes legislation to fund the government past April 28, when the current continuing resolution expires, federal agencies will be forced to shut down most operations.
"The casualties during a government shutdown are endless," Cox said. "There will be no more federal loans issued to small businesses or new home buyers. Federal research into cures for cancer or other deadly diseases will abruptly end. No more applications will be accepted for new Social Security cards, veterans' benefits, and housing assistance. Our national parks, monuments, and museums will be forced to close."
Cox also called on Congress to reject a White House proposal to cut $18 billion from federal agency budgets this fiscal year.
"The administration wants to slash funding for programs that help Americans find affordable housing, protect our environment, educate our children, and deliver mental and public health services to millions," Cox said. "Those who need our help the most would be hit the hardest by these cuts."
I was gonna start a small business, buy a new house, see if I had a deadly disease, apply for Social Security,Veterans Benefits and housing assistance and visits parks, monuments, and museums too.
Then I was gonna help Americans find affordable housing, protect our environment, educate our children, and deliver mental and public health services to millions.
Guess I'll just stay home and mow the lawn, can't do anything without the American Federation of Government Employees.
I just power-washed my deck, b-4 priming and painting.
So I pretty much thumbed my nose at Mother Gaia, union and wetback labor.
Build the dam wall.
this time, no pay for gov’t employees who are not at work, ie, no more extra paid vacations called gov’t shutdown.
Which is why it isn’t a good idea to have so much of the population totally dependent upon the government. The Founding Fathers never meant for it to be that way.
In a government shut-down, it’s the people who don’t have to pay the price.
What government doesn’t spend during the time off, is one less thing for taxpayers to cover.
I don’t recall any union leaders taking BHO to task letting in all potential ebola carriers.
During a “government shutdown”, “essential services” continue.
At which point we see exactly where government spending should be slashed.
This time, instead of spending money keeping the “public lands” (parks, BLM, monuments, etc) locked down, just leave the d@mn gates open.
I suppose we do save money on paperclips.

So offset all the “negatives” with NO “retro” pay for non-military government union employees after the shutdown is over. Problem solved!
I didn’t see them complain when Obama took money from cancer research and other services to pay for illegal minors because it was costing many millions each month.
It’s going be tough, but it is a cost I am willing to pay...
Shut it down — permanently m
We need to stop paying the government workers for these paid vacations. One of the nice things about a shut down is we can tell what we can do without
The White House and the Congress are Republican. So why are we even talking about this? I don’t get it.
If the Govt shuts down like the last time ... I predict the folks that work at National Parks etc will suffer the most...
We were caught by surprise last time ... I really hope that they call in sick rather than be the dicks they were last time.
I need a tiny crying towel to go along with my tiny violin.
As a private citizen who worked his whole life in the ‘private sector’ I have never been affected by any of the government ‘shutdowns’.
