It gives you the chance to work out the necessary skills 3 days from home, before you launch to Mars, 3 years from home. Like making a few trips to Canary Islands before heading off to the Indies.

It’s NOT the distance that is the advantage! It’s ESCAPE VELOCITY and ENERGY requirements to achieve that velocity.
The distance is merely a mathematical variable. It does not matter much in the equation....................

Alas, the only way to live on the moon is permanent relocation.
Some day, we’ll need a colony on the moon, to help build rings around the Sun, for after out population on Earth passes a few hundred billion. Until then...

Building below ground gives some insulation against solar radiation, too. They are unprotected by our magnetic field. They’ll need to do that on Mars, too, I believe, for the same reasons. No magnetic field.

“Other than the spectacular view from there, what advantage is there to living long-term on the moon?”
I’ve thought for many years it would be nice to send our worst criminals there one-way, like Botany Bay (not the space ship).
It worked ok for Australia, although perhaps not so much for the residents already previously there. On the moon, they wouldn’t displace anyone.

I heard some conversation last night on George Nouri’s show about the Mars thing. Uh, I don’t think I’ll be volunteering to take that one on. I’d miss my dog too much and I don’t even have one anymore.

Back in the 1960s, the US Army had Project Horizon, which never came into fruition. One could dust-off the plans, make some updates...

Dear NASA, there is no air or water on the moon. It does not seem wise to build in an area that does not contain those things.

With today’s technology, Project Horizon plans would probably be as obsolete as plans for a Conestoga Wagon Train..............
