I've said for years that the process of negotiating or dismantling trade deals would always be a political challenge here in the U.S. because the political leadership of this country would inevitably find themselves in a position where some industries benefitted from trade deals and others suffered from them.

It's easy to be "apolitical" when you're sitting at a desk posting on a website like this, but politics is what drives everything in Washington.

Would you put U.S. farmers out of work for the benefit of loggers, as a hypothetical example?

Not one of these people understands Trump.

He is renegotiating NAFTA.....that was ALWAYS his goal. His threat of tearing up the current agreement made negotiating possible.

That is how you negotiate.

The same with China. Trump still believes China manipulates it’s currency, but while they are helping us with North Korean, he tones it down. If they backslide, Trump will get the world behind him to brand them a currency manipulator.

These are all negotiating tactics. Trump is still advancing toward his goals, but it is easier to write stories that he backs down, flip flops, etc because the journalists writing this have an agenda or are just plain too stupid to understand.

I would rather the USA be self sufficient in BOTH milk and lumber. Lumber jacks drink milk and farmers build houses.

The biggest beneficiaries of this tariff will be U.S. lumber producers in Washington and Oregon ... two states which did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016.

Not sure that's correct. Pine is a softwood, and growing pine wood is a huge industry in the South, for both pulpwood and timber.

When did trade agreements become globalist? Do you know why auto manufacturers moved to Mexico? It wasn’t cheap labor if you are thinking that right away. Read a report car manufacturing in Mexico cuts 300$ per car. Their 46 unilateral trade agreements for parts and materials globally makes it 2-3000$ cheaper per car. See the pattern here? Less government, less regulations = free market captitalism not globalism. Most don’t have the faintest idea NAFTA has created billions upon billions of free flowing capital, millions of jobs and thousands of new businesses.

Free trade agreements done the right way are good. Get Government out of the way

in essence, Mexico is leaning towards a socialist government change in the next election, a government, if elected, would be very negative towards the US....at least Trump is able talk to the principals in MX city....

The U.S. is one of the largest exporters of dairy and lumber products in the world. What happens if these exports decline considerably because we don’t have trade deals with major foreign markets that other countries have? Will that make you happy, knowing that at least we’re “self sufficient” while our dairy and lumber production (and employment) drop by 30%-50%?

Thanks for that correction. I’ve been referring to lumber in general in these posts, when the tariff is really focused on softwood lumber.

“Mr” Trump instead of president Trump. Psychological warfare.

Trump still believes China manipulates it’s currency, but while they are helping us with North Korean, he tones it down.

If Trump was open and honest about China's currency manipulation he'd be exposed as a fool because it doesn't match his political rhetoric. China actually manipulates its currency to inflate its value, not to devalue it in an attempt to make China's exports less expensive.

Here is a graph that shows which states have the most timber land by acre. No advantage there for Dim candidates and I think the southern states timber would be more softwood, which is what the Trump tariff involved.

Top 10 U.S. states based on total forest land area in 2007 (in 1,000 acres)

Read a report car manufacturing in Mexico cuts 300$

I will gladly pay $300 more for completely American made car. That keeps Americans working at productive WEALTH CREATING manufacturing jobs which lowers the public/social debt. The taxpayer will be repaid 10 times over. What we do now is create thousands of socialists every time a factory is shut down. Do you not think their children see the suffering of their parents and their communities going to shit?

That is what he said, ‘NAFTA is a bad deal, and I’ll renegotiate it. If they won’t cooperate we’ll get out.’

Well, nobody is going to get out because everyone is going to come to a fair agreement.

Things would be so much easier if we had even a half-way honest press.

I’m sure not an expert on the timber industry. I just know a hell of a lot of pine is grown all over the South. I can’t go outside without seeing a log truck or a pulpwood truck going down the highway.

Absolutely. But most in the press are not intelligent enough to understand this.....they are detached from how life works in reality and just see everything in terms of politics and Washington DC.

Even when Trump blased the Freedom Caucus, it was not because he was going left, it was because he wanted them to come to the table and be part of the solution. He did not want to risk them walking away from the negotiations.....which they did not and we are on the verge of a replace/repeal bill.

Trump wins again.

That isn’t the point I was making. They save 300$ per car from cheaper labor and 2-3000$ from less regulations and the favorable 46 unilateral trade agreements Mexico has with other countries. Meaning our own government had a BIG hand in killing auto manufacturing in this country. I am fully for unfettered free market access with government completely out of the way. Do that and watch the economic conditions sky rocket

That’s a good post, but I’ve been looking for a more accurate source of information that represents timber production instead of forested area. Areas west of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains are likely to have much higher timber yields per acre because of the very high levels of precipitation out there.

We have trade deficit with every country we deal with. If those countries tariff us we should tariff them. If under retaliatory protectionism we export less X then we will import less Y also. Domestic supply of Y will have to increase. There will be temporary inflation in the price of Y until domestic supply meets demand then the price of Y will go down. As for X, the price of X will drop which will be a benefit to the US consumer. This may cause worker X 'displacement' ( nice globalism term for being unemployed ), but at least there will be somewhere for them to go. Maybe they will go into Y production.
