The biggest states impacted will be all the rest where new home prices are going to go up rather dramatically because of the increased lumber costs.

Here is the question I have never seen answered: What is it that Trump actually wants out of this “renegotiation?”

That’s a good point, but I believe the main reason the Canadians bought all those U.S. mills was that the Southeastern U.S. was simply the strongest market for new housing over the last 15+ years when these decisions were being made.

Yes but they still are American States. He promised all of America not just the states that went with him. Stop thinking like a politician but think of the entire nation thats what Americans really do......

Southern Yellow Pine is indeed used as the predominate species for treated lumber. SPF is not typically treated.

All lumber to some extent is regional. It is a commodity. Therefore, you can substitute one specie for another. However, most areas of the country have a preferred species. Most of the time it is what has been used in that area for a long time. They are slow to change.

For example, in the Atlanta market they may use SPF(Canadian) studs 2x4’s but their 2x8, 2x10 & 2x12 is all Southern Yellow Pine.

In southern California it is all Douglas Fir.
In Idaho it is all Douglas Fir and Larch.
In Minneapolis they buy SPF studs and 2x4, 2x6. They will switch between Hem/Fir(US)and SPF on 2x8. 2x10 & 2x12 is all hem/fir.

This is what I mean that it depends on you location on whether the duty directly or indirectly effects you.

Wouldn’t the easiest thing be just to nationalize the American car industry? The would guarantee employment and wages.

Destroying domestic manufacturing by offshoring may be getting over on uncle sam and the regulatory state but that is where you are wrong. What you are doing is throwing Americans under the bus and giving Republicans a bad name.

PS: The social chaos caused by globalism is playing into the hands of the Democrats.

My approach however is getting Government completely out of the way entirely and let the free market system flow unabated.

The free market system might flow unabated within the USA, but anyone pretending that it does, or ever will, flow unabated on an international basis is simply deluding themselves.

All the pretend free trade agreements have cost the US millions of jobs and tens of thousands of factories either relocated or put out of business by imports.

The US needs to end its free trade, free market fantasies and learn to deal with international business competition as it is, with every nation looking after its self-interest first of all. The US has been Uncle Sucker for far too long.

Your assumption that without NAFTA(or no trade at all with Mexico) the current $528B in economic actively would cease to exist. That is where your thinking is wrong.

Unfortunately we can't do an empirical study based on a series of events that never took place. Do you have any evidence to support your claim that my thinking is wrong?

That is also true. However, there were also European companies like Klausner that built new mills in the southeast with the idea to primarily export back to Europe. SYP is the least expensive softwood fiber basket in the world. Plus all these new mills in the south are non union, just like the car manufacturers.

Here is a perfect example of a typical scare tactic used by anti-American Free Traitor™s on display for all to see. Thank you.

I'm not sure even HE knows that ... and I'm certain he didn't know it when he was on the campaign trail last year. LOL.

If that means every 7 years when I buy a new car it costs me $1000 bucks more then so be it. IMO Money well spent.

This is great in concept. For me it means I can't afford the "new car" anyway ... so I'm on Year 11. Does the auto industry benefit from expensive domestic production when people are holding onto their cars longer than ever, and the average automobile in the U.S. is more than twelve years old? That's the million-dollar question, I suppose.

My comment was based on the highlighted point in the article, which seemed to suggest that the many of the states where job losses were likely to be seen had voted for Trump in 2016.

Globalism is not free trade. Globalism is allowing another nation’s body have governmental control over our very own. Yes I’ll agree money can lead down that path however free trade is not in itself globalism. Also free trade has created millions of jobs, businesses and opportunities. In fact free trade has allowed Honda to build many plants in the US with Honda money and employee thousands in manufacturing, shipping, retail, sales, advertising, finance, and countless others in surrounding businesses supporting Honda right here in the US

Ok what about the imports? If we stopped importing $300B from Mexico(or any other country) does than mean $300B disappears from the US economy? No, of course not. That money will be spent in the USA buying goods that are hopefully made here, goods that had been exported previously.

That is because we have allowed our Government to pick the winners and losers in the market. Why anyone in their wildest imagination would entrust the government to pick winners and losers in the marketplace escapes me. The government is the problem not the solution. The free trade agreements you seem to not like have actually created millions in revenue, jobs and businesses. See Honda as just one example of many. The problem is the Government is in the way of business pure and simple. Free markets can work. If I were a business owner making a product that is popular and I receive part of the material from another country for a competitive advantage you’d say to hell with your product even if I employed thousands here to assemble it.
