As I recall, Trump repeatedly said NAFTA was a bad deal. He didn’t say “ no deal, “ EVER. If these guys renegotiate to our benefit, we win. That’s what I want, that’s what Trump promised.

Thanks for the reminder......plus the fact that Trump is a great negotiator means we’ll win...... again.

Exactly! I remember him repeatedly saying he would renegotiate NAFTA for a better deal!

That is what he said, ‘NAFTA is a bad deal, and I’ll renegotiate it. If they won’t cooperate we’ll get out.’

Well, nobody is going to get out because everyone is going to come to a fair agreement.

Things would be so much easier if we had even a half-way honest press.

Exactly right. He wanted to renegotiate NAFTA. However if we needed to pull out he was ready to do that.

What sort of rational "want" is that if every nation wants to negotiate to their benefit?

It is an often used classic quote now, that "Nations have no permanent friends or enemies; only permanent interests."

Of course no trade agreement can ever be perfectly balanced, nor all negotiators perfectly honest.

But we can hope that reasonable people exist who can agree on obvious abuses, based on claims of relative poverty or threat of power in some form.

And there's always the complication of various levels of corruption endemic to individual regions and countries.

I suppose that "negotiation" is the best way to deal with the mess, not allowing some two-bit country with delusions of grandeur, whose name begins with "B" to decide.
