Beijing would consider an oil embargo against Pyongyang in the case of further nuclear tests by its reclusive neighbour, according to diplomatic analysts. A suspension of oil supplies from Beijing could deal a much harder blow to Pyongyang than any of the existing sanctions, possibly paralysing the government of Kim Jong-un.
But analysts said China was unlikely to impose further sanctions on North Korea without a mandate from the UN Security Council, given Beijings sweeping ban on coal imports from the North since February.
Though economic data, especially on the sensitive crude-oil trade, is sketchy, analysts believe Pyongyang has for years relied on oil imports almost entirely from China, its top trade partner and economic aid provider.

And I'm still wondering what has been promised to China.
“And I’m still wondering what has been promised to China. “
I suspect the conversation went something like this...
Trump: I’m gonna knock the sh@t out of North Korea.
China: We won’t allow it.
Trump: I will put American and South Korean troops in the North.
China: We won’t allow it.
Trump: Well, you have a choice. We can do it, in which case we will take over the North. Or, you can do it. It’s your choice.
China: We’ll get back with you shortly.
Embargo rocket fuel....
If true this is a big deal.
Yep, it would bring about regime collapse, after millions die. So sad.
At least all the dead would be NORKS.
But it would take at least one year, maybe two.
And there’s no assurance it would not provoke them to assault South Korea and Japan while they still have energy.
China can use the UN for stalling purposes. Why not?
China will try to sucker us, rest assured.
Poison their rice fields. Starve the country....if they take him out, restore food.
True......China will try to sucker us,
Experts are very suspicious of china, satellite pics show they’re still trading coal with them
It will cripple their economy, if Iran does not step up to replace the oil from China. China has already slowed coal shipments to North Korea.
If we can get the UN security council to agree to sanctions on any oil imports to North Korea, we could see U.S. ships interdicting oil shipments to North Korea.
I think the leverage is the THADD system being installed in South Korea.
It can, operationally, perform anti-missile interceptions of ballistic missiles fired from China, if it had such a mission. We have assured China that is not the mission for THADD in South Korea, but if they want it removed, it will require the end of North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs. As long as North Korea keeps those programs operating, THADD will stay.
THADD in South Korea is to China like having a Chinese THADD system in Mexico.
I think they will join in every proposed pressure on North Korea. Then it will be waiting to see if the North implodes, or a new less belligerent military clique assumes control via an internal coup, or China manages to put up a puppet (hasn’t had that power inside North Korea), or if stupid Kim acts like Saddam, thinking his military is way more powerful than it really is.
If China does not go along, I expect Trump will punish their trade with us, severely, high tariffs, AND lock Chinese state controlled enterprises out of the U.S. domestic market as well, either their imports here or operations here.
I imagine we will next put them up in Wake, Guam and Hawaii.
Me too, but maybe it's worth it.
Russia will veto. China must do it without a Security Council resolution. China just needs to decide whether they will help us or not.
“Russia will veto.”
They don’t have a dog in this hunt.
They will abstain. Mostly because of the masterful PR campaign underway now.
Russia vetoed the last Security Council resolution condemning NK. China abstained. If you run a Google search, you will find articles about this.
