Data Compiled: DoJ releases first figures for illegal aliens currently in prison

You may recall one of President Trump’s earlier executive orders dealing with Public Safety in the Interior of the United States. Part of that order directed the Department of Homeland Security and the Attorney General to begin compiling data on illegal immigrants who are incarcerated, detailing the immigration status and possible detention or deportation orders for each. The first round of data compilation in accordance with that order has been completed and the DoJ sent out a news release today with the figures. It will probably come as no surprise to at least some of you that the figures are described as “significant.”

There are 45,493 foreign-born inmates currently in BOP custody, of which 3,939 are U.S. citizens (either naturalized or derivative). Of the remaining 41,554 foreign-born inmates (aliens):

Jeff Sessions provided introductory comments in the report, noting that, “Illegal aliens who commit additional crimes in the United States are a threat to public safety and a burden on our criminal justice system.” This will undoubtedly have a number of liberal activists setting their hair on fire, but this really just comes down to math.

The limited data released thus far also demonstrates how inaccurate and dishonest it is for people to conflate the general category of “immigrants’ with “illegal immigrants” in these debates. It’s commonly stated in the mainstream media that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native born citizens. You may actually be able to back up that statement with figures when you’re talking about legal immigrants, but those prison numbers tell the other side of the story. Out of more than 45,000 immigrants (of any immigration status) currently in prison, not even 4,000 of them are clearly identifiable as being in the country legally. More than 36,000 of them are either already under orders for deportation or are under pending investigation for same.

I suppose open borders advocates can look at these figures and say that it’s still not “epidemic” in proportion. Given the size of our country, perhaps you feel that something south of 50,000 prisoners “doesn’t represent that much crime.” But if you ask me, that’s still 50,000 crimes and the same number of victims which we wouldn’t have had to deal with if we had actual border security.

By the time you get to prison you have probably committed quite a few crimes.

I absolutely hate undefined acronyms, specially in excerpts, since I belong to AAAAAA and and nobody knows everything.

BOP = Bureau of Prisons
One minute wasted times a million Freepers scratching their heads equal... a bunch of hours.

Interesting, informative and significant statistics.

That said, it would assist in comparison if we knew (unless I missed it) what might be the ratio of non-citizen/citizen incarceration within the bureau of prisons?

And, how might this compare with the ratio of non-citizens/citizens within these wonderful United States?

Exactly why we should not have to wait until illegal aliens are caught and convicted of other crimes before they are removed.

That is about 1.5 billion dollars in housing costs. This is not including the cost of prosecution and other related costs associated with the alien.

“Illegal aliens who commit additional crimes in the United States are a threat to public safety and a burden on our criminal justice system.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ALL illegal aliens MUST commit other crimes to continue their illegal presence.
There are NO “law-abiding” illegal aliens.
Illegal employment, benefit fraud and fraudulent documents at the very least, many much more serious crimes.
We should not have to wait until they are caught and convicted of other crimes, being an illegal alien is enough for removal.
Yeah, see that a lot. Also people will use terms like ‘tri state area’ where you have to figure out which 3 states, or use regional terms like ‘super’ for superintendent or building manager. Some writers seem like they are writing only for their neighbors.
This is only federal prisons. How many in state and county jails and how many on parole?
Wikipedia says there are 190,000 prisoners in BOP. So about 25% are illegals.
Good start for reporting. Any chance we can get reports on
* Number of illegals with EBT cards (with $$$ cost)
* Number of illegals receiving Obamacare subsides (with $$$ of government subsidies)
* Number of illegals in public schools (with $$$ and related NEA requests for more funds)
* Number of illegals using emergency rooms without ability to pay (with $ cost for hospitals)
I honestly think a lot of liberals I know would change their thinking, if not position, if they had a clue about the real $$$ cost. Especially the relatives in California - no chance the state will issue their own reports but even the federal cost will affect some of them.
based on 2014 numbers the Feds housed 210,567 prisoners.So about 22% of the prison population is illegal immigrants. Remember these numbers do not include state prisons as far as I can tell.
Do you know, does this include those who are incarcerated or being held for criminal charges in state prisons and county jails? Or are these only those held up by Border Patrol/ICE/Homeland Security?
Thank you.
Ok, ok. The 26 asylum seekers can stay. But double check their paperwork!
Those are only federal prisoners. The states and counties have many more but are reluctant to give out stats.
CA has 160000 state prisoners. 17% are foreign born. Still that does not include county jails.
More than 50,000 crimes since getting caught and convicted for just one is highly unusual
Way more than that number if victims
