Boston Globe: Maybe Trump was right to fire Comey
Boston Globe ^ | Evan Horowitz

Democrats are outraged, Republicans are carefully weighing their words, and the air is thick with analogies to Watergate, but here’s the thing about President Donald J. Trump’s stated reason for firing FBI director James Comey: it’s perfectly sensible.

The case against Comey was laid out in a letter from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. And what Rosenstein says is the same thing Democrats and many former Department of Justice officials have been saying for the better part of a year: Comey badly mishandled the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s e-mail server, undermining the integrity of the FBI and earning a pink slip in the process.

In other words, it’s not Comey’s treatment of Trump that got him fired, it’s Comey’s treatment of Hillary Clinton.

As evidence, Rosenstein points to two widely-criticized decisions that Comey made. First, the press conference he held last July, at which he announced that he would not be recommending charges against Hillary Clinton — while at the same time sharing his opinion that she had been “extremely careless.” This public airing was widely viewed as a break from FBI precedent, to some a worrying one.

Second, and even more controversial, was Comey’s decision to inform Congress about a cache of Clinton e-mails unexpectedly discovered less than two weeks before the November election. The mere possibility of a last revelation garnered massive media attention. While the e-mails ultimately proved nugatory, some credible analysts believe Comey’s late-day announcement may have helped swing the election to Trump.

Both of these acts really did draw wide criticism from former Justice Department officials, as Rosenstein notes. They have been exhibits one and two in the Democrats’ case against Comey for quite some time.

The difference between why Democrats think he mishandled it and why many of us think he mishandled it are miles apart though.

THEY think he should have just quietly covered it up.

WE think she should have at least been brought before a Grand Jury.

THEY think if a Democrat is important enough the laws shouldn’t apply to them.

WE think they should.

THEY think Comey shouldn’t have referenced her misdeeds at all in dismissing the investigation’s results.

WE think he shouldn’t have dismissed the investigation’s results and used his public statement as a bandaid.

The best part of this article is the comments afterward, ranging from a simple, Est-like primal scream of “Trump is a traitor” to personal attacks on the author to claims that no reasonable person would view this as anything other than a Saturday Night Massacre. My favorite comment is that there aren’t two good sides to every argument.

Second, and even more controversial, was Comey’s decision to inform Congress about a cache of Clinton e-mails unexpectedly discovered less than two weeks before the November election.

IIRC, these were the e-mails discovered on Wiener the wieney wagger's laptop by NYPD. If Comey hadn't revealed them but NYPD did, think how THAT would have played out.

I love the complete at odds with itself reasoning of Democrats :”The law should apply equally to everybody” / “Hey wait, she’s running for President, you can’t investigate her”.....
