Putting America’s ... $18.6T economy into perspective by comparing US state GDPs to entire countries

The map above (click to enlarge) was created (with assistance from AEI’s graphic design director Olivier Ballou) by matching the economic output (GDP) in each US state (and the District of Columbia) in 2016 to a foreign country with comparable nominal GDP last year, using data from the BEA for GDP by US state and data for GDP by country from the International Monetary Fund. For each US state (and the District of Columbia), we identified the country closest in economic size in 2016 (measured by nominal GDP), and for each state there was a country that was a pretty close match – those countries are displayed in the map above and in the table below. Obviously, in some cases the closest match was a country that produced slightly more, or slightly less, economic output in 2016 than a given US state.

It’s pretty difficult to even comprehend how ridiculously large the US economy is, and the map above helps put America’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $18.6 trillion ($18,600,000,000,000) in 2016 into perspective by comparing the economic size (GDP) of individual US states to other country’s entire national output. For example: ...

Whatever you do though, don’t spend $10 billion dollars on a wall to keep grifters, criminals and terrorists out, even though that’ll provide hundreds of thousands of jobs for our workers.

Debt to GDP doesn’t change though.

And it’s bad. Up there with Japan and China.

“Why is Puerto Rico considered a country?”

Good question for the author of this article.

Debt to GDP doesn’t change though.

And it’s bad. Up there with Japan...

Part of OUR debt is because we are funding or subsidizing other country's defense including Germany which some around here like to brag about the German surplus...

Well, we could have a surplus too if we weren't funding/subsidizing theirs and other country's defense.

BTW, if there's a surplus AND they're supporting 100's of thousands if not millions of refugees (and more to come), their taxes are too high...or they're lying through cooked books.

Countries or country'?
Singular possessive of country is “country’s.” The noun remains in the singular form and “ ‘s “ is added to indicate possession. “Countries” is simply the plural form of “country,” So, if you are talking about more than one country, it would be “countries.” If you are referring to something that belongs to a particular country, as in “This country’s national parks are favorites among tourist destinations”; you use the possessive.

I mean countries’, as in:

“Several countries’ water supply has been affected by the toxic spill.”

The apostrophe is used at the end of a plural noun when it’s necessary to denote the possessive case.

Where would that 18.6T economy be today had there been reasonable growth over last 8 years instead of the Obambi anemia?
