Californias sun will go dark Aug. 21. And when the moon crosses the sun, Californias solar power grid will slowly, quietly, stop working.
State energy officials are warning residents to click off all lights they dont need and unplug all electrical appliances when 62 percent of the sun disappears over Los Angeles during a partial solar eclipse that is expected that day.
Nobody is warning of blackouts. But then again, nobody knows what will happen.
Close to four percent of the power the city of Sacramento depends on comes from solar.
So this Great Solar Eclipse in August is going to be a big deal.
Picker said the CPUC could compensate with small power plants that burn natural gas. But unlike the solar facilities, the natural gas plants would emit greenhouses gases, so theyd rather not fire them up.
We don't have to rely on expensive and inefficient natural gas peaking power plants, we can have cleaner air, we can keep our system reliable, and we can send a message to the rest of the country that we can do all of that without being forced to rely on fossil fuels as the only foundation of our electricity, Picker said.
He hopes.
Democrats in Sacramento have introduced SB 100, legislation that would force Californias energy to come only from renewable sources like solar power by 2045.

There will be no desert left..just solar panels..fools all
Idiot solar worshippers.
Why would it be worse than what happens with cloudy weather or when the sun goes down at night?
Whoaaaakay.....
Don’t they have night in California?
I know, right? And exactly how long will the sun be blocked during this eclipse, which only affects 4% of the power, anyway? OMG it is DOOMSDAY for sure. What hysterical liberalism.
Nah, their legislature passed a law banning it, so...
...so they'd rather not do their job.
Maybe they should sacrifice to the sun god
62% of the sun that provides less than 4% of the power is going away for about 2 minutes.
What a bunch of crap.
Just like “we need to pass the bill to see what’s in it “ Kinda like a stool sample.
Luckily, I still have my stash of Y2K water and beans to hold me over...
In fact, the sun will depart from the usual 100% of sunshine to anywhere from 10% to 60% of sunshine, depending on where you are and varying over the course of perhaps 2 and a half hours.
Once again, nothing different than a weather system passing over the state.
“Picker said the CPUC could compensate with small power plants that burn natural gas. But unlike the solar facilities, the natural gas plants would emit greenhouses gases, so theyd rather not fire them up.”
Insanity.
Surely the solar infrastructure has sufficient battery assets in place to keep things going for the 20-40 minutes of the totality of the eclipse. I mean, WTH do these mental midgets think happens at night?
I held on to mine for 15 years before throwing them out.
That would be a solar farm larger then most states.
This is a problem easily solved, if the nations of the world joined in the effort.
The many nations building and possessing nuclear weapons and long range missles could, in unison, send all their missles and nukes toward the MOON. Don’t forget, the MOON is the problem here. The unified and synchronized blasts would break the MOON into small pieces of space dust and thus the problem is solved. NO more dangers of that useless space body to interrupt Stupidfornia’s supply of “FREE” solar power.
Not only that, the lack of a MOON would eliminate the constant rising and falling of the ocean’s tides. No more coastal flooding.
If anyone thinks this is a good idea, seek help soon.
