A wave of violent refrigerator explosions in Britain reportedly is believed to have been caused by an attempt to make the machines more “green.”
The five reported explosions — which destroyed the refrigerators and the kitchens that housed them — appear to coincide with a widespread switch to ‘Greenfreeze’ technology, the Daily Mail reported.
The new refrigerators use a different cooling system running on gases that are supposed to be less harmful to the ozone layer, but refrigeration contractor Graeme Fox told the Daily Mail that if the flammable natural gases leak into the fridge, they could trigger a powerful blast.
One woman whose fridge exploded three weeks ago told the Mail it caused more than $16,000 worth of damage. Another told the paper she thought an earthquake had struck when she and her sleeping family were rattled awake by her exploding fridge.
An independent engineer confirmed that a gas leak is suspected in the most recent fridge explosion, the Daily Mail reported.
Institute of Refrigeration President Jane Gartshore told the Mail that it’s theoretically possible that the blasts could be caused by an isobutane leak but added that “there are hundreds of millions of these fridges and these incidents are very, very rare.”
There are more than 300 million Greenfreeze fridges worldwide, the Mail reported.

Don’t know if this has been corrected but it’s not unusual for people to have a fridge that is 8 years old.
Yes, they use iso-butane refrigerant which is highly flammable. Iso-butane is also sold here as a “universal” refrigerant for car AC replacement.
They probably started a camp-fire in their living room. don't laugh. Knew someone who lived in a suburban neighborhood that had an influx of Yemenis. He saw them slaughtering a goat in their back yard. The 10-12 year old girls being forced to play soccer in their full black hijab was another interesting sight.
If it wasn’t for that D*** Global Warming, we would not need those D*** refrigerators.

The architect for the renovation said fire retardant materials were specified. I would think that was true because if not, the plans would not have been approved. However, it's possible the contractor substituted another similar material. Or it was a Chinese manufactured product that wasn't made to specifications.
The house next to us exploded and burned because of a butane explosion (the idiots were manufacturing honey oil [hash oil]. How quickly the fire spread on the apt. bldg. reminded me of the fire next door. Of course, there's no comparision between a two-story wood structure and a 27-story apartment building, but if some kind of accelerant like butane was involved and ran down the outside of the building, you might get something like that. "Fire resistant" does not mean fireproof.
Refrigerators tend to do that when the C-4 in the Crisper bin ignites.

Possible “workplace accident” must be strongly considered and investigated, i.e., terrorist(s) may have lived there and stored or prepared dangerous items such as bombs or fuel..... not saying that is the case, I have no idea, but it should be considered if the UK is not too far gone into the PC pit.
