There are a lot of large blood vessels and nerve bundles in the “hip” area. I’m guessing he lost a lot of blood.

Man, they were saying he was in stable condition before! What happened?I would suspect a large venous blood clot. This is not that uncommon with major trauma. They go to the heart and then out the right ventricle and lodge in the lungs. Dependent on severity it can kill you.
