The 7.62x39 is actually an intermediary round between a rifle and pistol round.
Its ballistics are about the same as a 30 30.
I realize that 7.62x39 is not a particularly high powered cartridge but it would still suck to be shot with one.
Same ammo as AK-47.
Right. It is a cut down round designed for control and more accuracy firing out of the AK or SKS. The Soviets shooting the 7.62 x 54 out of AK- 47s would be unacceptable, or using the 7.62 x 25 Tokarev would be under powered.
I have a .223 pistol and a 30-30 pistol that I load myself. The 30-30 is hot and I use spire point bullets for my TC Contender. I also have a 35 Remington barrel but just use store bought ammo so far. I’m not sure if my .44 magnum with 200 gn HP loaded hot reaches rifle velocity in a 14 inch barrel, but the difference can’t be more than a couple hundred feet per second. A 30-30 rifle with a 150 grn goes maybe 2200-2300 ft per second. My M1 Garand using 30-06 is what I would call high power. My M1A at .308 would also qualify. 762x 39 is very close to the 30-30.
