Trump took to heart that fact of unarmed soldiers as sitting ducks on base.

He vowed to fix that. This event will bring it to the fore, especially, after the baseball park shooting of public servants.

Well, it shouldn’t be “standard protocol”!

Standard Protocol should be all hands on deck, weapons locked and loaded and at the ready,

It’s California. Our men are doubtless, unarmed.

NOPE federali law. i have civilian friends who work on bases or on federali property and they cannot have a gun unless it is registered on base and they are going to/from range. this means they are unarmed on their way to and from work too. federali felony if caught so one loses their CHP.

Actually, it is up to the installation commander. Trump made a show of changing policy, but there isn’t a man among our esteemed military leaders who will risk their careers for the lives of their troops. It’s truly despicable.

Actually "shelter in place" is for the families, kids, moms on post to lockdown at school, don't clog the roads' go to the exchange till we figure this shit out.

It's not so much for the actually military men and women.

Yes, he did. I do expect to hear him raise it again.

Voters should insist on this change.

Contrary to popular belief and the movies, not every military member carries side arms or rifles. Most perform support tasks that don’t require arms. More than half of a bases population are civilians. Arms cannot be stored in base housing or barracks. Firearms are not allowed to be transported on base except to and from the base armory or by permission from the base commander. Only security personnel are allowed to carry arms, unless a heightened security situation warrants.

Given the current situation authorized personnel would be armed all others, such as clerks, cooks, military dependents and civilian contractors would be ordered to shelter in place.

The reason for this is, you don’t want 15000 people running around, in a panic while you are attempting to deal with a situation.

The Latest: Congressman says report of shooter on base false
[Associated Press]
Associated PressJune 14, 2017

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) — The Latest on a lockdown at a Northern California Air Force Base (all times local):

5:10 p.m.

A congressman says a mistaken report of a shooter prompted a lockdown at an Air Force base in Northern California.

U.S. Rep. John Garamendi tells The Associated Press that the lockdown went into effect at Travis Air Force Base on Wednesday after someone reported a possible gunshot.

Garamendi, who was briefed on the situation, says there was a training exercise underway at the base at the time and “someone took that to be an active shooter.”

The Solano County Office of Emergency Services posted on Facebook that there is no active shooter and the response has been canceled.

The base is off Interstate 80, approximately 45 miles northeast of San Francisco.

Thanks for the correction. I forgot about base commander call. Probably was thinking more ofvnon military property. I can hike all over Rocky Mountain National Park or Great Sand Dunes armed but have to lock gun in safe in car to go into visitors center.

Yep - they advertise when they will do the exercise, making it easy for someone to try to cause confusion with a real attack. They also break many anti-terrorism rules by always massing folks from certain areas in the same places instead of following the protocol of evacuate and disperse.
