Even though this was not an event which took place during battle, Petty Officer First Class Gary Leo Rehm Jr. sacrificed his life and died the death of a hero. His name should be added to the list of sailors who will have ships of the line named after them in the future. And a posthumous award for his unbelievable bravery, devotion and sacrifice would not be out of order. God Bless and rest in peace, Petty Officer Rehm. Few of us will ever match your mettle.

Thank you Jazz Shaw. Many a fine military member have lost their lives in non combat scenarios. When you sign on the dotted line and raise your hand to take the oath, you are laying it out there for the United States to use you as needed even to include sacrificing your life if required. PO1 Rehm went above the call of duty to try to save his shipmates. Rest in peace sir.

Navy ships should be named after heroes, not victims. Petty Officer Rehm was a brave man, and a true hero. Gabby Giffords, on the other hand, was a victim.

If Rehm was one of the sailors who died in compartments that had to be sealed off, maybe he was a hero and a victim.

What can we do to make sure the next DDG is named after this Petty Officer? Back in the day, at awards ceremonies, the phrase “Highest Traditions of the Naval Service” was (still is) commonly used. The actions of Petty Officer Rehm are at the very core of that statement.

What a tragedy that PO1 Rehm had to die in this horrible way. And the other young lives snuffed out by that piece of garbage container ship with its incompetent crew. My heart weeps for the needless sacrifice of such caliber of men.

I do not see how this could have been an accident. Somebody needs to pay for this.
Was it an _pieceful_religion_ guy at the destoryer helm, or did the other ship purposely ram the destroyer?

I haven’t seen this mentioned..

One day we search a freighter for possible nuclear smuggling in our port.. The next day or so a freighter hits one of our Navy ships....

Current evidence suggests both crews were incompetent in their duty.
