How far left can California's legislative Democrats go before Republicans benefit at the ballot box?
Los Angeles Times ^ | June 22, 2017 | by George Skelton

Democrats in the state Legislature are walking a tightrope, seemingly oblivious to potential danger.

First, they raised gas taxes and vehicle fees. Then the Senate passed a ridiculously costly universal healthcare plan. Now, the Legislature is getting close to helping undocumented criminals avoid deportation.

How far left can the majority party careen, even in deep blue California, before Republicans start benefiting at the ballot box?

California voters only like state taxes that other people pay. A recent poll by UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies found that 58% of voters oppose the transportation funding plan.

In contrast to the gas-tax legislation, Senate passage of a single-payer healthcare bill, in which the state would pay all medical costs for Californians, was simply irresponsible. The Senate’s own analysis pegged the annual price tag at an astronomical $400 billion.

Democratic legislators have been behaving as if they can’t fall from their lofty supermajority perch. Keep it up and there could be a jarring splat.

Can the United States secede form California? Or should we just give it to Mexico?

It’s already 60% Hispanic. Give it to Mexico.

What exactly will the GOP “win” if they win California?

California and Illinois are in a race to statewide insolvency and collapse.

Yup. They believe that Trump is Hitler and Republicans are Nazis, so I don’t expect this shift to occur, no matter how bad things get.

“It’s already 60% Hispanic. Give it to Mexico.”

In places you’re right. Next question, are you also willing to “give AZ, NM and TX to Mexico” as well? Because they all are almost as close as California. Guys like you really pi$$ me off with your moronic big mouths. Go back to your double wide and fry something!

“California and Illinois are in a race to statewide insolvency and collapse.”

Unfortunately, unlike Illinois, California does have an economy. CA is at 2.4% GDP growth, while Illinois is at 1.2%. While I would hope that CA would be first, I don’t think that’s going to be the case.

California has triple amount of universities/colleges in the nation. My observation is that each time a university or state university is added, the district goes liberal. Check out interesting list of number of colleges in USA:

Last I heard, AZ, Texas and NM are not about to go bankrupt.
California is on the edge of going bankrupt.
Beautiful State. However, decades of RAT party rule has killed it off.

Some people can’t handle the truth.

What exactly would the GOP “win” by winning California back?
The demographics are not reversible.

Won’t happen.

Now that 4 million illegal aliens vote in California, the democrats are in permanent power there . . .

. . . until the Hispanics realize that they are now the majority, whence they will form La Partidad de la Raza and no longer need the democrats.

It will be a fitting end to the California democrats.

Sadly, it will lead to a secessionist civil war with the rest of the United States when the Hispanic Californians decide to secede and join Mexico.

The majority of the Central Valley is Republican. Bakersfield and Kern County are deep red. We basically have two different states residing in one.

Texas isn’t in fiscal trouble?

I would refer you to this article:

http://www.usgovernmentdebt.us/compare_state_debt

California comprises ten percent of the population of this country. Some of our most necessary military installations are in California. California Agriculture feeds the rest of you. Land-wise, the Federal Government “owns” 45% of the land in CA. Also, probably 90% of California land area wise is conservative. And yet people like you want to “vent” your “frustration” and call for the entire West Coast of America to be given away ( yes the entire West Coast, because Oregon and Washington are at least as bad, if not worse than California in terms of their politics). And in truth, none of what you and your low IQ friends propose, is going to come to pass anyway, so at the end of the day you are just pi$$ing into the wind with your mouths. The real issue is how to we go about taking back all of our country from Socialism. And I do mean all of it. To suggest that the “heartland” isn’t on the same track today as “the coasts,” is just plain abject ignorance.

I went to the article’s web site (LA Slimes) to see what the comments were like there.

Amazingly they read like those here in freerepublic. Are Californians actually regaining some sanity? Is the illegals voting what’s keeping CA leftists in power? It may very well be the case, that if it were not for illegal votes CA would even today be a red state based on the comments on that article.

Given that Republicans are not even allowed on the ballot for most statewide offices, thus suppressing Republican turnout generally, I’d say they can take it about as far to the left as they want.

In primary elections the top two vote getters are chosen for runoff even if they are both from the same party. Cool huh?

Jungle primaries at least stop one party from crossing the line to mess up the other parties primaries. If the democrats have enough to close out both of the top slots... the district didn’t have many republicans to begin with.
