Feds plan to arrest parents who smuggled kids into US

SAN FRANCISCO — The Trump administration plans to arrest parents and other relatives who authorities believe smuggled their children into the United States, a move immigrant advocates said would send a wave of fear through vulnerable communities.

A new “surge initiative” aims to dismantle human smuggling operations, including identifying and arresting the adult sponsors of unaccompanied minors who paid coyotes or other smugglers to bring young people across the U.S. border, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials confirmed Thursday.

That marks a sharp departure from policies in place under President Barack Obama’s administration, during which time tens of thousands of children fleeing gang and drug violence in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador crossed the border and were placed with sponsors in communities nationwide. Sponsors — typically parents, close relatives or family friends — have been expected to care for the children while they go to school and seek legal status in immigration court.

“Arresting those who come forward to sponsor unaccompanied children during their immigration proceedings, often parents, is unimaginably cruel,” said Wendy Young, president of Kids In Need of Defense, a nonprofit that has matched thousands of unaccompanied minors with pro bono attorneys in the last eight years. “Without caregivers to come forward, many of these children will languish in costly detention centers or be placed in foster care at great expense to states.”

ICE officials did not respond to questions Thursday seeking details on the number of sponsors who would be targeted or already had been arrested, or what charges would be applied. Immigrant advocacy groups said they were investigating three arrests in Texas, New Jersey and Virginia that may involve sponsors.

Good. Arrest all illegals, arrest everyone involved with bringing illegals here, and fine or arrest everyone knowingly employing illegals. Deport or imprison all of them.

How many of those "children" were over 20 or even 30?

How many of those "children" have joined violent, criminal gangs like MS-13?

Since when is smuggling not a crime?

Trump has stated repeatedly that we're a nation of laws.

Laws are not for picking and choosing, as leftists wish.

‘Laws are not for picking and choosing, as leftists wish’

EXACTLY! Whenever I argue abut laws with a Lib, they are always saying ‘where’s your compassion?’, like I am heartless. My response is always, Laws are LAWS. If you don’t like a law, then change it. DON’T JUST IGNORE LAWS YOU DON’T LIKE. Take control of the lawmaking bodies and change the laws. This seems like a ridiculous solution for them, but their side has been ignoring laws for decades. Without adherence to LAWS, we have the Obama Admin......they, who trampled on SOME people for no wrongdoing and let others (their own) slide for serious criminality.

Ummm...isn't that the point? Otherwise, they would be giving them awards and showering them with gifts to encourage them, right?

You got that right BofB

How many of those "children" were over 20 or even 30? How many of those "unaccompanied children" have joined violent, criminal gangs like MS-13? Since when is smuggling not a crime? Trump has stated repeatedly that we're a nation of laws. Laws are not for picking and choosing, as leftists wish. (hat tip Bon of Babble)

In fact, the onslaught of "unaccompanied children" over the border was a calculated act --- a criminal shakedown by shady Central America hnchos to get mote foreign aid money from the US.

=====================================================

Central American govts conspired against the US---threatening the United States w/ more child invasions .......UNLESS we sent them more foreign aid money.

Guatemalan President Otto Perez warned the USA: "you will be inundated w/ more contagious illegals if billions of US tax dollars are not handed over."

As you read his words, remember that Guatemalan President Otto Perez is under investigation for misuse of foreign aid. Perez was formally charged on Thursday, June 16, 2016, in a sprawling corruption scheme that emptied government coffers and laundered money to be spent on Miami shopping sprees, real estate and luxury vehicles.

==============================================

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - The United States should provide billions of dollars to help Central American nations curb the flow of illegal migrants, Guatemalan President Otto Perez said, and his government warns the problem will get worse if Washington fails to help.

Fleeing violence, trying to reach relatives already in the United States or seeking jobs, record numbers of child migrants from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador have been stopped at the southern U.S. border this year, causing widespread alarm. Last month, the three countries pitched Washington an ambitious development plan to confront the issue.

They want to pump about $10 billion into the region to create jobs and lift living standards, with the bulk of funding coming from the United States, Perez told Reuters. He hopes the plan could come up with about $2 billion a year from 2015 to 2019, a sum he equated to roughly 10 percent of annual U.S. spending on border security and immigration enforcement.

"Now we understand it's not simply a question of the United States saying: 'Right, here's $2 billion a year for five years' for example - the governments of the three countries have to play their part too," the conservative Perez, who took power in early 2012, said in an interview late on Monday.

The US aid package would boost infrastructure and provide more jobs in all three countries, especially in areas that send large numbers of migrants to the United States, he added.

The three Central American governments are urging the United States to shoulder the lion's share of the costs, arguing that U.S. demand for illegal narcotics has fueled violence among drug gangs across much of the impoverished region.

"The United States has to support this, it has no other option," Guatemala's foreign minister, Carlos Morales, told Reuters. "If they don't support it, the crisis will kick off again, you can count on it."

Perez said he hoped the United States would put up about 60 percent of funding. "But we'll have to discuss it calmly and see what each individual country can do, and what can be achieved by common consent."

During meetings in New York in September, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told Central American officials he hoped Congress could approve about $300 million in funding, Morales said, noting the sum was "nothing" given the scale of the problem.

Central American leaders are due to meet Vice President Joe Biden on Nov. 12, 2014 in Washington to sound out U.S. support for their plan, Morales added.--SNIP--
