A Free Press Is Not Enough
American Thinker.com ^ | July 3, 2017 | Tom Trinko

Americans don't need just a free press; they need access to accurate information in order to make up their own minds about what they want the government to do.

While it's true that a free press is a prerequisite for the people to have access to the data they need, it's not sufficient.

We currently, despite Democrat attempts to the contrary, have a free press in America. Yet the systemic left-wing bias of the mainstream media(MSM) – ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, NYT, Washington Post, L.A. Times, etc – means there is little difference between the accuracy of the information most Americans receive and the accuracy of the information people living in Communist China receive.

In both cases, highly skilled propagandists shape, through omission and commission, the news in order to create a false reality the ruling class uses to motivate people to go against what is in the people's best interest and instead support policies that benefit the ruling elites.

Many Americans believe, because of the Fake News generated by the MSM, lots of things that aren't true, including:

- Mankind is causing the Earth to warm in catastrophic ways. Real science says that at worst, it's unclear, and at best, there's no catastrophe at all.

- Twenty-five percent of the population harbors sexual attractions exclusively to members of the same sex. The real number is more like 1-2%.

- Trump colluded with Russia to steal the election. No evidence has been found after months of investigations and illegal leaks.

The Ministry of Propaganda gives the narrative and most people live by it.
More are waking up and seeking out the truth.
The internet has made it impossible for them to stifle the truth.

I pray that's true.

We need a responsible press.

I’ve long complained of outfits like FOX and most talk radio shows that it’s not what they say, it’s what they fail to tell you.

There are multitudes of examples, but a recent one is the handing over the control of the Internet to outsiders. The news made it sound like 0bama just decided to do it late in his term. But the truth is it was a long time coming and Congress was well aware of it from the beginning.

Had we known, there would have been time to do something about it. However, nobody on ‘our side’ saw fit to sound the alarm bells.

Concentrations of Power.

The Left Media Cartel has too much power in the market. The market needs more competition to stay free and fair.

To promote opportunities for more competition, stop funding the Left Media Cartel. Cut your cable tv and tell your provider you will be back when they offer a la carte.

Buy local, generic brands, not national brands that fund the Left Media Cartel.

Go to local, family owned restaurants, not the national chains which fund the Left Media Cartel.

Take your savings from cable tv, cheaper brands, etc and contribute to conservative media.

The Left Media Cartel is near a tipping point. Lets push them over the edge.

To disrupt the system, we must disrupt our lives.

"Real science says..."
Real science says there is no such thing as "settled science". Even gravity is not a sure bet. Einstein had to modify Newton's theory and even that might not be completely correct. Science is an ongoing process.

"The real number is more like 1-2%."
There is no evidence that homosexuality is "natural". Sure it sometimes occurs with animals in captivity, but that is hardly a natural environment. There is absolutely no purpose for it existing anywhere in nature.

"Trump colluded with Russia"
No evidence. Nuff said.

Good article. If you will, I’ll add three additional points from the article that it includes as managed or fake news corrections.

- Republicans are racists. It’s Democrats who oppose school choice for blacks, who don’t care that black women are five times as likely to abort their babies as white women, who bring in cheap foreign labor while black unemployment is twice white unemployment, and who don’t care about thousands of blacks being shot in our inner cities each year.

- The unborn aren’t human. Science says an unborn child is human from the moment of conception.

- Planned Parenthood provides women’s health care. Baby part-selling PP really provides only contraception and abortion.

“A free press is not enough.”
That is correct. We need free and independent presses.
People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. It is impossible indeed to prevent such meetings, by any law which either could be executed, or would be consistent with liberty and justice. But though the law cannot hinder people of the same trade from sometimes assembling together, it ought to do nothing to facilitate such assemblies; much less to render them necessary. - Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations
The AP “wire” is a virtual “meeting” of all major news outlets. It has the effect of homogenizing the reporting of news.

Journalism has commercial reasons to be negative, so “If it bleeds, it leads.” Journalism also has commercial reasons to claim objectivity. But when you know you are negative, and yet you claim to be objective, you assert that negativity is objectivity - which is a perfect definition of cynicism. But journalism is cynical about society. Skepticism about society is a necessary condition for justification of government. Cynicism about society “justifies” tyranny.

And the wire services exacerbate the problem by squeezing out contrary voices.

A free press doesn’t exist if
1) The government puts reporters in jail (as Obama did)
3) The government puts whistle-blowers in jail (as Obama did)
4) The government places observers in newsrooms (as Obama proposed)
5) The government “requests” to see and “comment on” articles before publication (as Obama did) and these requests are followed (as happened)
6) Journalists “spike” damaging stories in return for access in future “theoretically more important” situations (as they have admitted to doing).
7) Journalists (individually and as a profession) have strong bias for one party (as almost all surveys/studies have found)

A free press is just fine if these thing don’t occur even if
1) The president tells the people his side of the story (or opinion) when the press doesn’t want it to be known
2) The president calls the press mean names (even if singling out individual reporters)

If the media can show legal consequences for their actions (fines, jail), I’ll stand with them against Trump. I don’t see a right to ask a question in a press conference. If they can’t get questions answered off-camera, there is a problem (with Obama/fox or CNN/trump). That retaliation is bad (like fines or jail), but if it only consists of lost “camera time” I won’t get worked up about it being a legal consequence or infringing on free press.
If they just complain about losing a PR battle against a single tweeter (Trump) I’ll continue to laugh at them.

“Mankind”!

How about we push back on free speech? Stop doublethink!

To those educated in the era of p.c. words, American schoolchildren were taught to use the masculine pronoun in writing about abstract he or shes. Imagine how many times a day you correct yourself before you speak. I would like us to revert back to 1960’s uninhibited speech where the use of a word cannot get you PROSECUTED FOR HATE. Pardon the caps.

When majority of the “press” is owned and controlled by a small handful of multinational corporations can it really be called free?

There aren’t many sources of accurate information. These days, with few exceptions, the best you can do is countervailing biases.

“The Ministry of Propaganda gives the narrative and most people live by it.”

Make that “The Democrat/Progressive Ministries of Propaganda”, so loved by so many radicalized members of the electorate.
