People assume that airplanes, UAVs, and missiles will win out wars for us nowadays. Miss the days where we would massacre the enemy so bad that they would begin for us to stop killing them. Because that the is war. And making the enemy beg for peace is the key, because war is cruelty.

Exactly right. So the Army is already lowering standards to increase its size and will take virtually anyone capable of walking and talking. I was in the Army of the late 70s full of these malcontents, drug users and slackers. It took Ronald Reagan to bring the Army and military back. I see no effort yet on the part of Trump to take the same course.

I would suggest we give him a little more time. I greatly admired Gen. Mattis, but I understand the misgivings many people are having.
I am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt here, since he has a Gordian Knot of trouble that took eight years to tie securely (and intentionally, IMO)
I did watch some of his appearances during the confirmation process, and his way of answering certain questions did not jibe with what I knew of him (and it made me squrim a bit to hear) but I ascribed that disparity to his need to get confirmed. In other words, doublespeak for political expediency. You can’t throw a touchdown pass if you cannot get into the game.
Sigh. I hope he doesn’t disillusion me. I am not quite ready for it yet...so much winning still going on, to have what will be a major loss.

For me, the military is the most important issue when I vote. That and the 2nd Amendment. To see that, as of yet, it appeara that nothing is being done is highly disconcerting.
Also what should have ended was our troops dying for no reason in Afghanistan.
My first thought yet they were all hetero. Starship Troopers seems more normal than 2017.

Excellent account of your meeting the Col. and his son, RL. Thanks for taking the time to write about it. As you say, this is disturbing on so many fronts. How in the world do we repulse this assault? I really (I mean REALLY) believed that the military, NG, CG, etc would be immune to this over the long haul and would be the bastion of common sense. It is so depressing to see the careerists in the military having rolled over under Obama. I thought there were men and women of principle who would have stopped this cold. I never once thought they would not resign or forego earned pensions when told to implement this garbage. This really puts out nation at existential peril.
In my opinion (and I don’t think I am alone here) these people are inherently unstable, and we are not doing them any favors as a society by treating it as an organic physical condition rather than mental illness.
I always felt the same way...that due to the nature of the military, the missions would dictate the flow of this and not societal experimentation.

I always felt that there was no way on God’s Green Earth that this outlandish LBGTQ (or whatever) crap would get a foothold in the USMC, but...I see it now, unless changes are made, as inevitable.
The shock troops we have used in the most dire situations in the 20th century up to now, are going to fall prey to this nonsense. It very nearly nauseates me.

We won’t even go to the fact that his budget failed to include money for the 355 ship Navy he promised in the campaign. But like you, military and the 2nd amendment are vital to me and I watch them very closely.
