Mattis: North Korean launch doesn't bring US 'closer to war'
The Hill ^ | July 7, 2017 | Ellen Mitchell

Defense Secretary James Mattis on Thursday said he does not believe North Korea’s new ballistic missile capability brings the United States "closer to war" with the country, but he asserted that the U.S. military "remains ready" for any conflict.

"I do not believe this capability in itself brings us closer to war because the president's been very clear, the secretary of State's been very clear, that we are leading with diplomatic and economic efforts," Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon.

The pre “Church Committee” CIA could have solved this problem without a major war. They would have decapitated the regime. Kim’s inner circle would have been told either you depose Kim, and retain your wealth and privileges in a united Korea or your “treachery” will be made known to the paranoid Kim.

Keep in mind, folks!
Gen Mattis isn’t just a general officer; he’s a United States Marine!

He wouldn’t be subordiate to this POTUS if he had any doubts bothering him.

Semper President TRUMP!
We’re damn fortunate to have him...if we can keep him!!!!!!!!!!

Unless China becomes wholly irrational there will be no military assault on Norkland. The nuclear threat thence will, however, be Trumped.

Not so sure about that. China hasn’t done much, if anything. NK won’t stop their missile tests. That doesn’t leave much on the table.

I believe Defense Secretary James Mattis is correct, but I still feel that shooting down every missile North Korea fires will do two things. One, it will show they are wasting their time on their missiles harming us and two, it will give us a real time chance to make our defense work.

I agree. So the question is why haven’t we done it? My guess is to avoid angering the Chinese...

The pre “Church Committee” CIA was capable of running a war in Laos and Cambodia, and doing a fine job of it.

I see little evidence of that. Just talk ... like the previous Presidents. Trump is being careful and doesn't want to restart the Korean War ... and that is good.

I think the problem is less about NK itself and more about the Kim family regime. The solution is simple to describe but not so easy to implement. We must kill the upper echelon of the NK government. Implementing something like that without triggering the launch of NK nukes is a challenge.

NK doesn’t have the ability to “launch” nukes at this time.

Has it been confirmed that they actually have 1 working weapon?

The solution is in China and always has been. Trump will offer China a deal that China cannot refuse. Xi will be offered a face saving something but will end the Nork problem as Trump requires. There will be no assault unless Xi is irrational. Thus far Xi has shown that he is highly rational in a Mafia sort of way.

China does not want China’s economy to collapse.

I've said the same thing many times except it is not a solution if the Chinese won't deal. So first all avenues with the Chinese must be exhausted. But then we are left with what has to be done.

The Chinese will deal. Xi cannot afford an economic crash of his economy. It would be easy to accomplish for the USA as it is built on a rickety foundation.

I hope so. Thus far I see no indications of anything happening. Same old same old. The Chinese may enjoy having NK around to stick a thumb in our eye. Thus I am not so sure they will be much help. If they do cut a deal it will be a figleaf in front of some phony deal.

Trump is dealing with the Chinese. There will be no shooting and no assault. China will save face-sort of- and the Nork missiles will be neutralized. There will be no attempt to buy off the Norks as has been our tradition to date. The problem does not stem from Norkea but from China and Trump is dealing with China. You don’t see the progress until one day the problem is not there any more and further enhancements of America’s position will have become apparent.

We know that Trump had to deal with the Mafia building in NYC and elsewhere over the decades. He understands that mentality and power dynamic better than any of his predecessors.
