British passengers to US could PAY MORE as White House seeks armed officers at UK airports

BRITONS travelling to the US could face higher air fares and extra security before boarding flights, under new plans.

The new plans are for the introduction of armed US immigration officers at UK airports.

The change would mean that transatlantic passengers would have to clear immigration before boarding an aircraft.

Airlines, under the plans, may be forced to pay for US security staff and their families to live in the UK.

It is likely that airlines would pass the extra costs on to passengers travelling from Britain to the US, according to reports.

Passengers would also be likely to be asked to arrive earlier at airports for flights because they would have to undergo questioning by US security in addition to usual checks.

The plans are being discussed in Washington and Whitehall, with officials understood to be negotiating over the practicalities.

Both Manchester Airport and Edinburgh Airport are said to be interested in the programme.

Heathrow is reported to believe the practicalities of bringing US immigration officials into the airport are insuperable.

Gatwick declared that it had “no plans” to participate in the scheme.

Questions still remain over who will pay for the officers to live in the UK and over whether they will actually be armed.

Back in the 70s, when there were still very few options for non-stop from Europe, I changed planes and cleared US customs and immigration in Toronto. It isn’t a new idea, and it is a great way to avoid the long lines at the US international hubs.

I guess actually getting rid of the problem is still not an option.

More police state tactics, more harassment and higher monetary costs to the innocent public.

Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Try profiling at these airports, that would eliminate the necessity of more police.

No big deal.
We already do this in Canada, Ireland, Aruba, and Bermuda.

It works smoothly n arriving in the States you don,t have to wait in immigration lines.

I went through this in Toronto last year. It took two hours to go through customs, immigration and security. People were panicking over missing their flights.

Dublin, Ireland, is another airport where passengers clear US customs and immigration prior to boarding. Upon landing in the US, passengers find themselves in regular domestic terminals. Simply get off the plane and go.

Italy has soldiers with Uzis in the airport and bunkers between runways with more armed soldiers - when was the last time there was a real issue at a major Italian airport?

I recall an American grandmother whose daughter was giving birth to the first grandchild in the UK (daughter’s husband in the military). She hired a private small plane to fly over the minute the daughter went into labor and was there for the birth. I hope this would extend to private planes for hire exiting the UK, too, as 3 or 4 men could just hire a plane to enter the U.S. and perhaps avoid a lot of scrutiny. Back in the day, it cost Grandma around $30,000 I recall flying to England from N.Y. Maybe it is too cost prohibitive now for the general population, but no goodnicks are funded by other no goodnicks.

This sounds exactly like TSA Pre-Clearance in Dublin.

It made connecting flights back in the US easy since you, and your luggage, arrive as “domestic” passengers.

Manchester definitely should be interested, I spent 1 1/2 hours in line awaiting their security check a few weeks ago. Not extra work after the bombing, but pure inefficiency with only 4 out or 20 odd lines in use. The fact the queues were zig-zagged in a large hall with low ceilings made it even more oppressive.

Anything would be an improvement there.

Sorry British & American travelers.
This is what uncontrolled Arab/Muslim
"migration" is going to cost. Do you still want it?

Doesn’t the UK operate a customs/immigration facility in France at the Chunnel entry port? How is this any different?
