In Interview, Trump Expresses Anger at Sessions and Comey, and Warns Mueller

WASHINGTON — President Trump said on Wednesday that he never would have appointed Attorney General Jeff Sessions had he known Mr. Sessions would recuse himself from overseeing the Russia investigation that has dogged his presidency, calling the decision “very unfair to the president.”

In a remarkable public break with one of his earliest political supporters, Mr. Trump complained that Mr. Sessions’s decision ultimately led to the appointment of a special counsel that should not have happened. “Sessions should have never recused himself and if he was going to recuse himself he should have told me before he took the job and I would have picked somebody else,” Mr. Trump said.

In a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times, the president also accused James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director he fired in May, of trying to leverage a dossier of compromising material to keep his job. Mr. Trump criticized both the acting F.B.I. director who has been filling in since Mr. Comey’s dismissal and the deputy attorney general who recommended it. And he took on Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel now leading the investigation into Russian meddling in last year’s election.

You have to admire a straight shooter. There were very few surprises in the interview. Most of what President Trump said was self-evident to those of us who have followed the matter. It has to be deeply discouraging to the President when even his appointment and old friend fails him. What the hell is Sessions up to anyway? He immediately recuses himself and then appoints what appears to be a Democrat as his Deputy who then promptly appoints another Democrat as special counsel. Is Sessions that politically dumb? Even after Sessions was confirmed, he should have man enough to resign if he was unable to do his job.

Yeah, I saw it. Thanks. I was a little disappointed to see a rift between Sessions and Trump - two guys I really respect.

See my long sad comment, up 4 or 5 from yours.

-- Sessions was deeply involved in hiring Rosenstein --

Under Trump's view, that is yet another reason to fire Sessions, is it not?

-- what are you discussing? --

Generally, Trump's expressed wish he'd never have nominated Sessions to be AG, on the basis that Sessions was unfair to Trump. That's a poison relationship.

I don’t get it!
Why is Trump giving the NYT the time of day, much less credibility?

Trump is a business man. You try something, if it doesn’t work, you make a change. It’s not business as usual in the Trump WH.

As someone said in an earlier comment, Sessions offered his resignation earlier when Trump expressed his dissatisfaction. And it is very low class of Trump to air his dissatisfaction in public and particularly to the Slimes, with a man who was one of his earliest and strongest supporters.

This sort of thing should be discussed behind closed doors.

I’d like to know why President Trump is giving an interview to a newspaper as thoroughly partisan and discredited as the New York Times.

Don’t think Sessions selected Mueller.

No he appointed a democrat friend of Mueller as his number one and let him do it. He is responsible either by stupidity or design, result is same either way.

I would say none of his picks have been outstanding. Sessions recused himself when he didn’t have to and shouldn’t have. The guy in charge is a Democrat. Tillerson’s State Dept is still running amuck. Etc. etc.
He needs to have pit bulls working for him in every department.

Agree

It is worrisome and may be an indication the pressure on Trump is having its intended effect

-- He's the last guy who should be AG. --

I was just pointing out the obvious, that he [Rosenstein] is next in line, that's all.

Of course Trump can fire him too.

“It’s a dumb comment by Trump.”

No, it is an honest comment by Trump. Jeff Sessions is the biggest disappointment I have ever experienced. Trump could have nominated a block of wood to Attorney General and had a better outcome.

Jeff Sessions is the limp dick of patriotism, there no amount of “patriotic Viagra” that couldn't make him perform any better!

Sessions needs to go!

Jay Sekulow would be an awful candidate for AG. I love the guy, but he'd be forced to recuse himself from every case under the sun ... because he's now part of Trump's personal legal team.

Its so dumb that its one of the main things gone over at an AG confirmation hearing.

They aren't to smart either are they. You want to amend the Constitution then work really hard and get it done.

Why you think that none of the crooks in the Clinton administration were ever brought up on charge? Because Clinton controlled the JD.
