What happens if McCain can't go back to work in the Senate?

Sen. John McCain's office announced Wednesday he has a cancerous brain tumor.

McCain's office is optimistic of his return to his duties, saying "Further consultations with Senator McCain's Mayo Clinic care team will indicate when he will return to the United States Senate."

The tumor, a glioblastoma, is a highly malignant, aggressive, cancerous tumor, according to the American Brain Tumor Association. McCain is 80 years old. He is getting treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation, at the Mayo Clinic.

The Seventeenth Amendment established the rules of appointing vacancies in the Senate. In Arizona, if a senator dies, resigns or is expelled, Gov. Doug Ducey would appoint a replacement of the same political party.

The governor could choose to appoint himself. The person appointed would serve until the next statewide election.

I’d hate to see McCain go downhill as these treatments debilitate his body. I hope he retires with dignity.

But seriously...
The Senate can expel a Member by a 2/3 vote- which would never happen to McCain.

Other than during the Civil War only one Senator has been expelled: William Blount in 1797.

A man of dignity and honor would have resigned the minute he learned of this extreme illness so that the Republic can function without unnecessary delay and he can spend every minute with his family.

“Isn’t that a cause of mental deficiency?
Yes, but when did that stop anyone from serving?
To some, it’s practically a requirement. “

He’d still be mentally better than Auntie Maxine.

It will be interesting and telling to see whether McCain chooses to remain in Washington DC with his political friends or return home to Arizona to spend his final days with his people.

I’ll wager he chooses politics over family.

McCain officially go t the death sentence. Liver and brain cancers are basically untreatable. I don’t what they do to him, he will not beat it.

Interesting that two US Senators of similar age and duration of service should both have this rare tumor.

McCain is not going to resign from the Senate.
The GOP will roll him up in a gurney or wheelchair
and his aide will place his limp hand on the vote button
and vote however McConnell tells him to vote.

Perhaps for a few months, but soon he will be bedridden if his cancer behaves like my friend who died of it last Friday is any indication of it’s course.

McCain is not going to resign from the Senate.

If he fails to take this cancer seriously he won't last long anyways.

“For the good of our country ( and I know that’s a stretch for McCain) he should resign immediately so that a healthy person can take over his “duties.”

That would be the honorable thing to do, given how closely split the Senate is between parties. Maybe McCain has it in him to do the honorable thing.

“Ducey may be a RINO”

Pretty hard to do worse than Mccain. Anyone appointed will have zero seniority too.

For Glioblastoma, McCain’s brain cancer type, the 5 year survival rate is 6%. Your odds are better at three card Monte.

I believe he won’t finish his term.

I lost an old friend to this, I doubt he'll see 2018 come in.

McCain’s daughter is age 32, according to Wikipedia. He and the party could have her appointed to fill out his term. His current term began January 2017, so his seat is not up until 2022 — unless AZ has a special law for filling vacated terms.

I hate the idea of appointing his daughter. While she is technically old enough, I'm against using appointments to create political dynasties. I prefer it when states hold elections to permanently fill a vacancy rather than have the governor appoint one to serve out the rest of the term.
