If you can't pass a math/science class, stay out of college.

You'll make more in the trades than in any degree program that doesn't require multiple math and science courses.

The trades require a lot of math. Plumbing: Calculating pipe lengths and bends. Electrician: Calculation loads and sizing requirements for circuits. Carpenter: Calculate the length of a rafter knowing the roof angle. The trades are full of math. You can’t go around all your life letting someone else figure this stuff out for you.

Hmmm, I’m sensing somebody doesn’t understand the real math behind lots of trades. Electricians need to know Ohm’s Law which is pure algebra. Carpenters need to know how to work with the framing square and that’s geometry/Pythagorean theorem. With a little training and a scientific calculator, the same carpenter with his square can lay out a radius.

No math in the trades, huh???? Showing up on a jobsite thinking that you can get by with just your hammer and a strong back will have you run off by lunch.

I agree with the first statement. However, math is very important for trades such as carpentry, electrical and plumbing. Very useful for figuring out how many bags of concrete are needed, useful for figuring out how many of each type of boards to get for building a deck, fence or other project. Especially if you're working with complex angles. A couple mistakes here and there will cost you big in lost materials and time.

Probably true for any productive job. But you can make good money in unionized education, academia and many federal grant mining activities that have little connection to math, science or logic and that produce nothing of - positive - value.

EXACTLY! We have inflated and hence cheapened the college experience.

Is a degree even necessary for most jobs in the economy?

I read recently that a plurality (or even majority) of Republicans think that colleges do more harm than good. Democrats thought the opposite of course. But leaving aside political indoctrination accusations, the honest observer has to ask if the costs of a university education really are a wise investment for students who outside of STEM fields who want to teach. Student loan debt is supposed to be a crisis.
