On Wednesday morning, Elon Musk made a strange announcement on Twitter: His Boring Company (yes, that's what it's called) had received “verbal government approval” to build an underground hyperloop, he said. The maglev-powered train thing would pass through New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore before terminating in good old swampy Washington, DC. All in twenty-nine minutes.
It sounded momentous—but “verbal government approval” isn’t a thing. A White House spokesperson said the administration had conducted “positive conversations” with Musk and Boring Company executives, but declined to comment beyond that.

Seems to me the only thing Musk is actually good at is manipulating perception.
Also the Alaska Way Viaduct in Seattle. Only took them 4 years to go 2 miles. NYC to D.C. Is about 225 miles.

The monorail idea was taken.
US railroads were built with private money. That also includes light rail like street cars and “L’s”.
That concept was frequently a topic featured in both magazines; Popular Mechanics, and Mechanics Illustrated, back in the 40’s,50’s and 60’s and even later.

While conceding no technical knowledge about this; I’m guessing that in order to clear all the already present underground infrastructure along his proposed urban east coast route he will have to tunnel much deeper than thirty feet.
The common law concept of complete ownership of land from the heavens to the core of the earth is mostly obsolete now due to sovereign retention of subsurface rights. The result is that if the project is permitted by government, subsurface boring will be allowed, probably without any compensation to surface landowners. There will be issues though of interference with other subsurface structures like sewer and water lines, and the noise, vibration, and potential for subsidence due to boring.
Elon is crazy-illy laughing all the way to the bank with government subsidies and misguided investments from gullible money managers and when it all comes crashing down, he’s even laid the ground work for his defence in court.... Insanity.
The only people crazier than Elon? The people who invest in his ventures that have yet to make a red cent in profit and that never will make a red cent in profit.

Plus the Hyperloop will never pay out, because it will be obsolete as soon as I can get around to finishing my tele-transport machine. I’m only about $2 billion away from wrapping it up.....
His car company looks like it may be the first to fall into the abyss. At some point people will get tired of his hype.
I would guess trains have to stop in Baltimore for the same reason I-96 is an interstate only in Michigan. Towns like the prestige of being a real stop for the railroads or being on a “real” freeway.
Automated aircraft will be the future of high speed travel. The expense of crew and terminals will be eliminated. The number of passengers needed per trip for economics will approach one. Adaptive controls will evolve quickly as needed. Break in bulk points will be spontaneous. First, Amazon will develop the technology for packages, then they will add passengers.

City politics
Schedules
Noise
Krishnas, Moonies, begging bums
Pollution
Right of Ways
Airport food
Reservations
Terrorism
Hideous parking fees?
A decent amusement park has been doing this for years.
