The truck and driver crossed the border somewhere, the bribe to the border agents had to be in the thousands of dollars. Trucks coming in from Mexico that aren’t searched always involve money changing hands.
You can be against illegal immigration and still recoil in horror at the circumstances these people experienced. It would be hard to imagine a worse death and the survivors will likely be permanently affected physically and mentally.
It is probable that they did not cross the border in the truck. Coyotes usually bring them over the border and then warehouse them at a drop point before they begin the rest of the trip to wherever they are going.
I don’t blame them for wanting to come here. I blame the politicians who ignore and even encourage the problem, the states that offer them benefits and don’t enforce the law, and MOST OF ALL the employers who not only give them work, but ask the coyotes for more of them.
Our border issue with Central America is a multi-faceted problem. It needs to be aggressively addressed at every level. However, all of us are right to feel sick about what these poor souls endured. It does not mean we are pro-immigration. It means we are compassionate human beings.
