Melania’s birth country, Slovenia, is an EU member nation. It used to be a state republic in the nation known as Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was communist, but considered itself nonaligned during the Cold War. It was not a Soviet controlled nation, and was not a member of the Warsaw Pact.

Slovakia, of course, is an entirely different EU member nation. It was part of another post-WWI amalgamation: Czechoslovakia. During the Cold War, Czechoslovakia was a reluctant Soviet puppet state and Warsaw Pact member. Since then, the country has split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
