Why people are getting the hell out of the Northeast
NY Post ^

Posted on 07/26/2017 9:06:34 AM PDT by TigerClaws

Winter is coming for the North.

Last year, three states in the Northeast — New Jersey, New York and Connecticut — landed in the top five places people were moving out of fastest, according to 2017 data from United Van Lines. (The other two states on the list were Illinois and Kansas.) And data from Pew Charitable Trusts found that while people are all about moving to the South (their population grew by nearly 1.4 million people from 2014 to 2015) and the West (866,000 more people,) the population growth in the Northeast is “sluggish.”

The Northeastern exodus is particularly acute in many big cities like New York City. Since 2010, more than 1 million people have moved from the New York area — which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island — to other parts of the country.

So why are so many northerners packing their bags? The insanely high cost

Data released on Wednesday by personal finance site GoBankingRates.com reveals that the No. 1 financial fear of people who live in the Northeast is that they will have to live in debt forever; the Northeast is the only region of the country that ranked this as No. 1. (The other regions put retirement as their No. 1.)

And no wonder they’re worried. The cost of living across the region is among the highest in the nation and three of the five most expensive states or districts in the country (New York, Washington DC, Massachusetts) are in the area. (The other two states are Hawaii and California.) Having to spend so much just to get by can make getting out of debt seem much harder. And housing costs and taxes in many of these states are also sky high.

Self-Reliance is conservatism. Helplessness is the liberal mindset.
You had a lifetime to develop home skillsets instead of wasting away on cable TV. What have you been doing??
By age 30, an adult should have mastered plumbing, electrical and carpentry. Fortunately, it is learnable.

Lovely rant, but I haven't reached the age of 30 yet. And being a female under 90 pounds there is not much I can do effectively in the building trades. I'm an investor and I prefer to use professionals unless it's my own faucet.
But you go right ahead and do your own surgery, if that's your inclination.

So for a young white male to be relevant he needs to fit into one of the targeted groups, he cant be Black or Hispanic unless he uses a lot of sun time. So he can fit into the LGBTQ group (I think I got it right) as a gay or transgender non binary whatever as long as he doesn’t exhibit masculine attributes. Do I have it right? And I presume the strait ones mimic the gay ones.

What you are not an admirer of the fine art and etiquette of North East Horn Honking?! One tap is to say okay wake-up the light is green, Two taps is to say: “move your lazy butt, no going 10mph in a 50mph zone!” Three taps: “Go F yourself” (Usually by the victim of a two tap.) And finally the laying on of the horn usually with the extension of the bird for someone who a) Didn’t get the message from the double or b)who cut you off or C)is laying his horn on too!

I know nothing about Maine so can’t give you any info. A question tho... Why are you choosing to retire in there?

It's near water and relatively pristine, and as far as I can tell won't become a 3rd world nation anytime soon. I have a friend in Montana who says to look around there but I know little about the northwest US. The Virginia peninsula is nice, rural (people there from White, Black and Latino all very friendly), but it seems VA will be blue for a long time from DC expanding.

I did ask him in a hushed, serious tone, if he didn’t think there might be an awful lot of (*shudder*) homophobes around in the south. He seems unfazed — “Oh I doubt that, people in the South are very nice.”

I think Maine is slowly, very slowly, becoming more conservative. It might be a decade before that becomes clear though, and it might never actually happen.

Similar to Oregon/Washington, I think, in that liberals of the enviro-hippie fruitcake variety are drawn to it, so that's a problem. Plenty of rugged conservatives and hillbillies as well, but also a lot of Somalis and Bernie Bros. Some fancy colleges (Bowden for example) that draw rich liberal kids. That said I drove up to buy a particular rifle (still had to fill out all the MA paperwork and show my MA permit, of course) and the gun counter was manned by three pretty college-age girls, all packing heat. Mainers of course enjoy permitless concealed carry.

Supposedly, on paper, Maine has a pollution problem, but the air sure seems cleaner than it does down here in MA. Maine winters are obviously harsh. Traffic, even in southern Maine, tends to be not bad in my experience, better than the thoroughfares in MA and southern NH. Like you said though, the taxes are high and job opportunities are not the best, but then again I'm used to having Boston and it's environs on one side and Providence on the other to choose a job from.

I will watch Maine will considerable interest going forward. I like snow at Christmastime and all my family is up here, two attractions that the south, for all it's other advantages, doesn't have.

You already lost once, your opponents couldn’t frag you from over the horizon that time, and also do you really want to try a second time when NBC weaponry is likely to be used and/or go missing during the chaos? Think real carefully before you even think about uncorking that hornet’s nest.

I thought the area around Kansas City was quite nice, as was the city.

The South Shore & suburban Bristol and Worcester Counties are a bit like central Pennsylvania; the rest of the state bit so much. I think Maine might be trending conservative.

That’s interesting regarding the orchestra. I believe that most of the budget of the BSO is covered by corporate and individual sponsorships, and it is one of the five great symphonies in the nation.

I agree I think the state might be trending conservative, despite the explosion of welfare and the implosion of the Roman Catholic church. North and Western Maine are very nice places to live and even Aroostook has decent hospitals.
