I’m a germaphobe. I have cats. And I kiss them. I just wash a lot. :-)

It could be someone is allergic to pet dander as you brought up.
We have 6 cats, 100% indoor, and my husband is an OCD clean freak. They’re much cleaner than dogs and have a natural deodorizer in their saliva so they don’t stink. (The smell of dogs has made me throw up.) The male cat thinks he’s a person.
It’s up to the owner to maintain the cats’ environment — litter box, etc. — to avoid odors in the home. We’ve sold houses and often buyers don’t realize we have any pets, much less 6 of ‘em. The cats hide when the doorbell ring so they’re never seen.
