Yes. They did. Then the vice mayor revoked it illegally. ACLU had it reinstated. Then the poop started happening.

I wonder if Antifa had a permit. This was a failure of the local government!

The local government failed to govern, they failed to lead and they failed to understand their duty under the law. That was their greatest mistake, that got people killed.

Antifa obtained a permit immediately after Unite the Right did. Then Unite the Right's permit was revoked, but Antifa's was not, nor were several other far leftist and progressive organizations permits revoked. For this reason the judge reinstated Unite the Right's permit.

Not only was this a failure of local (and state) government, it was a shill operation to put Unite the Right outside the Law while protecting and insulating the leftist Commie rioters.

They knew they had cover for initiating violence.

"The local government failed to govern"

You are absolutely right.

The mayor openly stated that he didn't want the Unite The Right protesters there.

After they trespassed on UVa property during their "torch" demonstration, the city of Charlottesville could have revoked the Unite To Right permit on the grounds that they were engaging in illegal activity.

They blew their opportunity, allowed Antifa to counterprotest, and somebody died.

Sounds like fertile grounds for a lawsuit against the city.
