Btw Chief Justice Roger Taney did not rule that African slaves could not be citizens

He found that the US Constitution as written did not confer citizenship on slaves nor could the US Congress make laws for the US territories like the Missouri Compromise that were therefore unconstitutional

Which meant that Dred did not have legal standing to sue in court

Dred Scott was a 7-2 decision on those grounds

And that's why conferring citizenship on past slaves required a Constitutional Amendment which later occurred as part of Reconstruction

Its a much more complicated but straightforward issue than “ racism”
