LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers continued their historic 2017 run, using a five-run eighth inning to beat the White Sox, 6-1, on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium, becoming the first team since the 2004 Cardinals to be 50 games over .500.

The Dodgers, who have the best record in baseball at 84-34, reached 50 wins at home for the third straight season. They are on pace to win 117 games, one more than the Major League record shared by the 2001 Seattle Mariners and the 1906 Chicago Cubs.

Only in the head of a baseball statistician would 25 games over .500 be considered 50 games over .500.

You’re assuming the Cubs make it into the post seasons? Little doubt that the Dodgers will.

I don't think so. This seems to be their year. I don't know how many, but a fair number of their games have been come from behind. They are never out of a game. They have a potent offense, great starting & bullpen pitchers & solid defense. Their 8th-hole hitter, Yasiel Puig, is hitting great - gong the opposite way & taking walks. He finally seems to have grown up. And they are doing this while Kershaw is on the DL. 50 game over .500 is no fluke.

For what it's worth ...

Since 1900 there were nine Major League teams that have finished a season with a .700 winning percentage or higher. Only five of them actually won the World Series the same year. The last one to reach the .700 mark was the 2001 Mariners, who did lose in the postseason.

Maybe he meant 50 wins over 34 losses?

You are correct, the Bums are 25 games above the .500 mean of 59.

Sports writers might not be all that good at that arithmetic thingy.

LOL. Exactly. But unfortunately that’s not the same thing as 50 games over .500.

Just like the brain-dead media who at election time report candidate X won by say 8% when the tally was 56% to 44%.

It’s baseball nomenclature. Everyone knows what it means.

Like for example the term winning percentage.

Right now the Dodgers are 84-34 which is referred to as a .712 winning percentage, without the point, e.g. “a seven-twelve winning percentage”.

I’ve been a Dodgers fan most of my life or at least since Dad took me to the ‘59 World Series. I did grow frustrated with the O’Malley family as they made money band over fist without joining Steinbrenner’s Yankees in going after free agents and trading for quality proven players. But since Magic and his group took over they’ve vastly improved their once vaunted farm system and are blending young and old for a great team. Heck, they have a good team sitting on the disabled list and are adept at using the rules to keep an “expanded “ roster to draw from. It’s hard to imagine them staying this not all year into the post season but hope it happens.

Question from a non-professional sports guy: does major league baseball have players who refuse to say the pledge of allegiance? If so, (I hope not) how can you justify supporting them?

Depends on how you look at it. They have to lose 50 games in a row to hit .500, so that's how it comes about. You're looking at their total games and splitting that (84+34 = 118; 118/2 = 59; 84-59 = 25). You're going off because baseball records games as halves, since you need a win and a loss to make a full game. That's how teams can be half games behind another team, is because they've played one less game.

That’s actually a pretty good argument. Of course it sort of ignores the fact that there aren’t 50 games left so it is sort of meaningless.

But, in fact, I believe you have it right. You understand how baseball folks think. I obviously don’t.

I don’t think so. I don’t think some baseball players want to alienate their fan base, but I could see it happening.

They can do it if they want, it is a free country.
