The US President predicts that monuments to George Washington could come down next - a claim historians say is "ridiculous".

Donald Trump has said US history and culture is being "ripped apart" by the removal of statues.

The President, whose intervention follows the planned removal of a Confederate monument in Charlottesville that sparked a violent far-right rally, said such actions were "foolish".

He wrote on Twitter: "Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments.

"You can't change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson - who's next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish!

"Also the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!"

The Charlottesville statue is one of multiple memorials across the US - many depicting military figures who fought unionist troops in the American Civil War - planned for removal.....

I imagine this will solidify Trump’s hold on voters in the South!

Robert E. Lee dedicated his life after the war to reunification and uniting the country.

And he wasn't fighting to preserve the institution of slavery. He felt honor bound to fight for his native state.

This is the most ridiculous movement I have ever heard of.

Isn’t destruction of public property a crime? Why are the police doing nothing?

This needs to be stopped A.S.A.P.

History is what it is.

Isis and the Taliban tore down monuments because they said they were offensive, and now look at what we have here.

A group of American acting like ISIS,and the Taliban.

According to a couple of recent polls is not just the South whose against removing these monuments and statues. The majority of Americans are against it too. As usual the dimwits and the gop-e overplayed their hand just to try to attack Trump missing the fact that they’re alienating voters.

Trump has certainly exposed the “GOP” rinos for what they are. If anyone ever had doubt, it is now self-evident who opposes America.

I guess you better start digging up all over America’s honored dead including a few Presidents from Arlington National Cemetery because it was land that was owned by General Robert E. Lee! Lee never pressed to have the land returned to him that was taken by the Union after the war. Most believe in essence he donated the property which had become a national cemetery. Lee’s son sued for the taking of the property and won in a supreme court case and than sold the property to Congress.

Lee turned down Lincoln’s offer to command the U.S. army because his state was leaving the Union. Therefore, he would have had to leave Virginia. When he resigned his command he had not yet been given command of the Virginia Militia so he didn’t leave with the intention of taking up arms against the USA. He simply refused to take up arms against his state.

It’s about America’s most costly war. And something should stay as a reminder that we lost a lot of people because of the divisions in our nation.

I’d like to see an exec order saying “if a confederate memorial comes down, it will be placed in a special place on FEDERAL property to protect our history.

I know that and agree. Just like to point our their hypocricy and their lack of historical knowledge.

Rush, Levin and Hannity have been hitting the left hard on this. How about removing all the Byrd tributes in W Va?

Yep. The left can spare us with this group being nice heroic citizens fighting evil Nazis. There are tons of footage of these violent leftist thugs assaulting American citizens for the last two years who have ZERO association with any neo nazi or white supremacy group including pepole who attended the inauguration.
