Even giving a complete (and undeserved) pass to people who would defend statues and other public honoraria that exist “to celebrate white supremacy,” the best response I have seen to Trump’s whitewashing (unfunny pun intended, of course) of bigotry was offered by the late-night host Jimmy Kimmel:

Fortunately Newsweek is read (if at all) by those who have already drank the kool aid. His words will not sway one Trump supporter but may send some southern Democrats towards Trump.

I have been to large rallies, and I would never pretend to hear well enough to vouch for everything said anywhere at such a rally. Nor would I claim that people at one end of a park should be able to hear and understand what the paid fake-Nazi/Klan protestors at the other end of the park are shouting. I often have trouble hearing the main speaker because of sound system issues/interference. The #FakeNews commentator’s point is nonsense.
There were fine people demonstrating in favor of keeping monuments to our history, warts and all. I know one of them, although he left early because it looked like a riot would break out. There were (probably) even fine people demonstrating against whatever real Nazi/Klan protestors they thought may have been there. There were also thugs and terrorists on both sides - and those people are evil, whether those who initiate violence for political intimidation wear a swastika or an Antifa bandana.
