Americans stake out prime viewing spots to watch the eclipse (LIVE THREAD)
AP News ^ | August 21, 2017 | Marcia Dunn

Americans with telescopes, cameras and protective glasses staked out viewing spots along a narrow corridor from Oregon to South Carolina to watch the moon blot out the midday sun for a magical couple of minutes Monday in what promised to be the most observed and photographed eclipse in history.

Sky-watchers everywhere — and millions were expected to peer into the sun — set out lawn chairs and blankets and awaited the first total solar eclipse to sweep coast-to-coast across the U.S. in practically a century. Astronomers were giddy with excitement.

Jim Todd, a director at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, warmed up the crowd at an amphitheater in Salem, Oregon.

“The world is watching us, folks, because we are going to get the first, best show and the weather is gorgeous,” Todd said. “The weather forecast is crystal clear throughout the state.”

David Avison showed up in Salem before dawn with his wife and relatives, after traveling by car and overnight train from their suburban Portland home. They couldn’t get reservations at a nearby resort, despite making plans six years ago.

“I’m telling people if you want to see the one in 2024, you’d better make your reservations now,” Avison said.

With 200 million people within a day’s drive of Monday’s path of totality, towns and parks braced for monumental crowds. Clear skies beckoned along most of the route, to the relief of those who feared cloud cover would spoil this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Libtard questions:
1. Does it stop in Charleston?
2. Will the fish in the ocean go blind?

LOL

Musing: we SAY ancient peoples were scared the sun was being eaten and yada yada...how do we actually know that?
Babylonians recorded and predicted eclipses: were they just practicing to be scared?
Were there cunieform tablets telling folks not to look or with pictures of people running around blind?

I heard the Chipewah shot flaming arrows at the sun supposedly to relight it. They would have been really embarrassed when they caught their woods on fire...

Just not sure how we “know” any of this stuff...I’ve read it but can’t seem to find sources for it.

If they WERE that scared seems like you would see rock carvings as cautionary tales and the like...

Wonder if we don’t puff this stuff up to make us feel superior and smarter....

Just wondering....

Last ‘coast to coast’ total eclipse was in 1918.....partial for a few states in 1979.

Even though it reached 78% in Sacramento at 1017 hours, you could really feel the temperature drop as the Sun’s light output dropped to 1/4 its normal level.

“That’s so silly”

Well, supposedly if a dog looked into the sun, like a human, it could damge their eyes. I kept the dog inside, away from the big windows we have facing west. Not a big deal, just trying to protect my pal!

Fox just reported there was a war years ago when the opposing parties stopped fighting because of an eclipse.

I sat outside with my Rotts and Horses

None noticed a thing

Only creatures I saw notice were birds

They roosted then started morning sounds later

Had totality here in Paducah about 50 minutes ago....that was awesome. We saw shadow bands a bit before and a bit after totality. Saw the diamond ring thing at the end of totality. It was the coolest and weirdest thing I’ve seen.

Animals are interesting...often wondered why animals go to dark places, like closets, cupboards etc when ill or dying.

yes, in ancient times, although the details are a bit murky and there may be some myth and legend intermixed with historical fact:

My neighbor had some eclipse glasses she let me use. I waited for the outer Corona so I could take a picture with my camera, but never seen it. Maybe I should have taken the glasses off. Oh well

Total washout here in Goose Creek. I only got to see a sliver. A few miles away the beaches got a great show.
