A Los Angeles jury awarded a woman a $417 million verdict yesterday. The jury found that Johnson & Johnson failed to adequately warn users of the cancer risks of the talc in its baby powder.
The jury's 9-3 vote to hold J&J liable for not warning Eva Echeverria about cancer risks is a huge blow to the company, which is facing thousands of such claims across the country. The verdict consists of $70 million in compensatory damages and $347 million in punitive damages, according to Reuters.
No clear link connects talcum powder to ovarian cancer. Some case-control studies, based on asking women who have ovarian cancer about their history, have found a slightly increased risk. But as the American Cancer Society notes, those kinds of studies can be biased because they rely on a person's memory of talc use years after the fact.
Two prospective cohort studies, which don't suffer from that type of hindsight bias, found no increased risk.(snip)
The Echeverria case was the first California talc case to go to trial, and the jury's massive figure will set a new standard for the many talc cases to come. Hundreds more are in earlier stages of litigation in California alone.

Asking my wife about this, she tseems to think that these ladies that are getting ovarian cancer from baby powder HAVE to be applying it wrong. You dont put it on your ovaries!

There has been NO talc in baby powder since the ‘70s. Unless the plaintiff is elderly, this is a bogus claim.
Finally a smart response. Everything that goes on your skin goes into your bloodstream. Petroleum products and talc are dangerous internally. Most people are completely ignorant of this fact.
But talc, used on the female privates, gets internal much easier than, say, on the arm. No one should ever use such chemicals there. Corn starch is also very bad. If a girl baby has terrible diaper rash and something is needed, there are special clays in shaker powder that can help. Coconut oil can help as well.
Don’t put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t pretty much eat. Or put in your mouth. I am still need at how ignorant people are about this and how many lotions and creams they purchase with long lists of chemicals on them. I wear a tiny bit of makeup but that is it, all my “moisturizers” are edible.
The punitive damages are high to send a message. Companies need to attempt to be positive products that don’t harm. Asking people to put toxins directly on their privates is not ok.

Very difficult to believe that the mineral Talc would be toxic to humans in general.
Obviously the dust could damage a miner’s lungs if he didn’t wear protection.

That's not entirely true. It depends on the size of the molecule whether it will penetrate the epidermis or dermis. Ever wonder why all the 10 tens of thousands of car mechanics of my age (67), including me are not flopping around on their shop floors?
I'm not buying that talc is the causality. Every Boomer and their Gen X kids were exposed to talc every time their diapers were changed. Why are we not dropping like flies?
This is just more junk science like the Alacar scare back in 70's. Everybody dies. Everybody drinks water. Therefore water causes death. I know, a silly example, but you get my point. Eggs were deadly to the human heart. Now eggs are okay. First it was fats, then cholesterol (which the liver produces), now it's tryglicerides. Better one: charred meat will kill you. Best: second-hand smoke will kill you, even from the next story down blowing into your window. Pfft.
And then there’s the guy who invented Vaseline.
The chemist Sir Robert Chesebrough, was the one who invented Vaseline, also known as petroleum jelly.
He patented the product in 1872. The product wasn’t accepted until he travelled around New York doing demonstrations on himself.
He would burn his skin with acid or an open flame in front of an audience and then use the Vaseline to soothe the burn.
He passed out free samples to get the product into the public. He believed in his product so much that he claimed to even eat a spoonful every morning.
He only lived to 96
I can’t understand why women would put baby powder on their lady bits. I can only imagine that they had a problem there to begin with. Ick.
At least a couple of years up here in Jersey. What the hell do they do with the talcum powder to get it into their ovaries, shove it up...(?)...never mind.

I put talc on my groin at the beginning of bike riding season when I shave off all the dreadlocks down there. It makes for a better riding experience. Prevents rash.
All my friends do it. I'm the only one who talks about it, though.
