Meet The Conservative Trying To Unseat Joe Manchin And Redden The Senate In 2018
The Federalist ^ | August 23, 2017 | Jayme Metzgar

It’s a remarkable quirk of our federal republic that U.S. policy often hinges on local races. Regional personalities and issues, emerging from places coastal elites have never visited, will play a significant role in next year’s midterm elections—most crucially, the battle for the U.S. Senate.

At stake is not just which party controls the upper chamber—the rough number of blues versus reds—but how faithful senators will be to their governing philosophies. As the dust settles from 2018, will Washington be more conservative? More liberal? More functional? Local politics will determine many of these answers.

In tiny Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, around 100 local Republicans recently gathered for one small episode in that larger drama. Most people arrived from work, still in business attire, but a few were more expressively dressed: T-shirts emblazoned with “Don’t Tread on Me” or “West Virginia Citizens Defense League.” As volunteers scrambled to bring in additional chairs, and the air conditioning struggled to keep the temperature comfortable, West Virginia attorney general Patrick Morrisey entered the room. Attendees held signs declaring the reason for the gathering: “Patrick Morrisey for U.S. Senate.”

Like the job he’s been doing as our SoS. Been activly cleaning up the voter registration roles, a job his RAT predecessor was loath to do. However, I just don’t see him beating Manchin.....the family is too well loved in this state, in particular his late Uncle AJ.

Trump won West Virginia by a huge margin.
I’ll be surprised if Manchin keeps his seat.

WVA is Deep Red. I see Manchin being tossed out of the Senate next year.

Its Democratic Governor became a Republican.

I’m surprised Manchin hasn’t crossed party lines

I believe Trump will put on one of the biggest all court presses ever seen in political history. He wants those extra senators so he can do what he wants and get the bills passed that he wants. We have not seen anything yet in the way of campaigning. This is a golden opportunity for him and Trump knows it. He made reference to it last night. Manchin best take the job offer now because Trump is going to steamroll him. Air Force One is going to be very busy.

My expectation as well, especially since Gov. Justice has paved the way.

Manchin wants to be the next Bill Clinton! (A Rat nominee for President!) But a Bill Clinton without the zipper problems & the Beelzebub wife. He sees himself as being the moderate pragmatic that all will turn to for President after the “extremes” of the GOP & the Rats. He thinks he can do “1992 Dick Morris Triangulation “ for 2024 (maybe 2020 if Trump falters!) without a Dick Morris or it being 1992. I think he is on a fool’s errand. It’s not 1992, the issues are different, the demographics are different and the emotions are different. Also he does not have Slick Willie charisma. He can probably keep his Senate seat but that’s it. I know for a fact he hates being in the Senate. Prior to the 2016 election he put out feelers about coming back and running for Governor again. He got talked out of it.

Only an adopted son here. Came in ‘02 after I retired.

Coming from NYC where EVERYONE talks politics, I found that few here will do likewise. A late friend explained it when he said to me “...they know where you live.”
I hang around another friend’s business here and he often gets pols and lawyers in. They always ask where I live. LOL (I lie and just say “in town”)

Everybody knows everybody in the Mountain State.
The county I’m from has about 15% more people than this entire state.....more if ya count the illegals.

Yes, if you have achieved any notoriety at all in the Mountain State you will soon get to know those who have done likewise. It’s a small group from a small but wonderful place & state!

Jim Justice is an utter numbnutz and I dearly wish he’d stayed a Democrat. I doubt that he could get a bill passed to declare Oscar Mayer bologna the official state meat.

Me too, except I'm still working.

My take is that West Virginians are pro-God, pro-gun, pro-life and pro-military, but they are also pro-trial lawyer, pro-disability fraud, pro-union, and pro-government cheese.

By and large a better class of people than you'll meet in most Northern cities though.......

I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t jump parties.
He has been around there for quite awhile and he can read the tea leaves.
