HURRICANE IRMA is bearing down on a string of Caribbean islands amid fears that it could barrel towards the USA next. Here are live updates on the path and the latest weather models.
Bringing you the latest Hurricane Irma path updates, storm track, weather models, the latest forecasts, tracking maps and videos as the storm heads towards the Caribbean.
Hurricane Warnings have been issued for nearly a dozen Caribbean islands as Hurricane Irma brings dangerous winds, storm surge and torrential rain across the Atlantic.
There is an increasing chance that Hurricane Irma could impact Florida, although it is early to say what 'direct impacts' there could be to the US mainland.
We will have the very latest Hurricane Irma news in one place, updated throughout the day and night until the storm has passed.
Here are live updates from the the NOAA, National Hurricane Center (NHC) and the National Weather Service (NWS) as well as the most advanced weather models from around the world.
There is an increasing chance of seeing some impacts from Irma in the Florida Peninsula and the Florida Keys later this week and this weekend.
In addition, rough surf and dangerous marine conditions will begin to affect the southeastern US coast by later this week.
Otherwise, it is still too early to determine what direct impacts Irma might have on the continental United States.
However, everyone in hurricane-prone areas should ensure that they have their hurricane plan in place, as we are now near the peak of the season.
9.57am CDT: Hurricane Warnings issued
Hurricane Warnings have been issued for parts of the Leeward Islands as tropical-storm force winds approach the Caribbean.
The NHC said: Preparations should be rushed to completion, as tropical-storm force winds are expected to first arrive in the hurricane warning area by late Tuesday.
Hurricane Watches have also been issued for the British and US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico where gales arrive by early Wednesday.
The NHC added: Irma could directly affect Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, and Cuba as a dangerous major hurricane later this week.
11pm: Florida should be 'paying attention to Irma'
Meteorologist Jeff Lindner, who has been dealing with flooding in Harris County, Houston, said Florida should watch the path of Hurricane Irma.
Asked if he was concerned about Irma, he tweeted: Not for us at the moment...but FL and the SE US should be paying attention.
Thanks for starting this thread! Hope our fellow FReepers (the serious ones, at least) continue to come here with/for Irma info!
Dang, NGXI stops right on my house. Guess I need to prepare for a major rain event.
Since I'm in S. FL (Delray Beach) I'll be checking this (and other) threads often. Not much I can do except for plan/prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Good Luck!
Yes, that was the storm.
Looks like it’s going to pick up forward speed over the next few days.....
I’m betting Southern Florida.
I don’t even wanna imagine what will happen if it goes into the Gulf.
Cat 6, anyone?
Not sure how long that front will remain in place, but two things it’s likely to do is pull the storm north and allow the storm to suck dry air into it which will weaken it.
If it remains too far south to get sucked north and it goes into the gulf, it’s going to be a bad one most likely.
If it goes into the Gulf...at least everyone has already been evacuated.
Which of these threads is going to be the “official” Irma thread?
Dunno. Maybe the Side Bar Moderator can sort it out.
When do you know to evacuate or at least send family north? I have some in West Palm area and some in Orlando area.
yeah I heard some people around here the other day talking about how this storm is going to be a “Category 6”, and how they’ve never seen anything like this before.
No such thing as a Category 6, you morons, and go educate yourself about Hurricane Camille if you think this has never happened before. And Camille was considerably more dangerous because it gathered a terrific amount of strength very damn quickly before it slammed into the coast with very little warning at all.
At least in this situation we are watching this train come from thousands of miles away.
So annoying how so many people know nothing about weather or its history.
Lithia Wal-Mart and publix slow. Nobody loading up. I just needed a few batteries and bottled water. Shelves full at stores. Hmm. Wonder what tomorrow will look like. Everyone waits til the last minute
Totally agree. If it goes into the gulf, and I had to bet where it would make landfall, I would bet the Florida panhandle.
Don’t say dat! Dat’s where I’m at!
Watching this one closely though. I Got out for Katrina early, and I’ll get out early for this one too.
Never wait from someone to say evacuate, then it takes 15 hours to go three miles and you run out of gas after 1.5 miles.
Good job! You did just what I would do.
